Shaft mounted valve spring compressor tools

Shaft mounted valve spring compressor tools - 11/10/19 09:30 PM

Hello,

I have a 340 with X heads and the shaft-mounted rocker assembly. I need to change some of the valve seals. I really do not want to remove the heads to do it.

What valve spring compressor tools do you guys use to compress the valve springs with the heads still bolted to the block for an LA engine?

Not sure what questions to ask or specifics to provide. Please ask for details if needed.

The Proform 67460 work pretty well. Use compressed air or rope to hold the valves while compressing the spring.

Quite a bit more expensive but worth it in my opinion. Easier to use when working by yourself.

Standard jaw type valve spring compressor and air the cylinder up is all you need....costs ya $25-$40 in tools

The one Mopar sells for SB works very well scope

The SC-100 is the unit for the small block mopar. however, you need to buy the adapter plate (SC-146).

Between the two parts, you are at: $205.99 + $59.99 = $265.98. To use it, remove the rocker shaft assembly and bolt it to where the shaft assembly would normally bolt to. Then use the tool on one section of I/E at a time to compress the springs. The good thing about it, you can compress the spring and use both hands to install the retainer and locks.

This is cheaper, but may be more difficult to use with one hand while I use my other hand to install the retainer and locks.

The Pro Form unit looks a lot like the original Mopar brand, those units, both BB and Sb, worked very well up

For $200 less you can slide a cheater pipe over the handle and hang a weight on it to keep the spring compressed and use two hands to do what you need to do.

Made this up from a few bits and pieces.

That's pretty much what I did, I even used the stock shafts. That and some rope. Cost $0.

There is a plate that bolts on the head, the rocker shafts need to be removed. Mine was purchased for W9 heads but my son has used it on his W2 heads, he had to make a plate but LSM sells the plate now. The main advantage to me is that it holds the spring down on its own and you can use two hands to get keepers in, out and positioned correctly.

That all being said I would check with LSM to be sure they have something that will work with your heads.

All the LSM stuff that I have is top notch.

I have the LSM for my engine but I don't know if they have one for small blocks but it's worth every penny.
