Max Wedge head (286) Spring seat/locator/cup size. - 11/01/19 07:39 PM

Dear Anyone,
I have 63 max wedge heads (286). I am replacing valve springs etc and I need locators.
I contacted the cam manufacturer and gave them specs, but the locators don’t fit and I haven’t seen any that look like they will.

The springs would need to be the 26095-16,
703-16 retainers,
612-16 locks
4711-16 seats (.570 ID)

My heads measure .597.
Does anyone know where I can get adequately sized seats? How loose is too loose? My old ones were .630-.640 which seemed WAY too loose.

Can you buy and use a inner spring that will give you between .015 to .040 or so clearances cold to the bottom lower inner small step on your valve guides?
If so do that twocents I have used those specs on a lot of iron headed motors, both drag race and street and strip with no issues at all up Iron heads don't really need spring cups or locator unless you want them.
I do use either a spring cups or spring locators on all my aluminum heads also though up
EDITED: You can buy a spring seat and valve guide cutter tool to reduce that lower inner step also work scope
I've had to do that more than once to get the clearances I want down there wrench scope
Isky and Comp Cams both sell them scope

The “problem” with your current set up is, someone used a spring pocket cutter with a non-standard ID(.597).

The two std sizes are .630 and .570.
Easiest solution is to just use a spring pocket cutter with an ID of .570 and trim your guide bosses down to that size, then you’ll have all kind of options for spring cups or seats.

Unless you’re running longer than stock valves, you’re likely going to find it a challenge to achieve 2.00” installed height with the typical beehive type retainer.
If you were planning on using a shorter installed height anyway, you might be fine.

While the .630 hole around the .597 boss isn’t ideal, it’s not the end of the world either.
I’ve seen numerous aftermarket import heads come with .630 ID locators sitting on .570 guides.

Many aftermarket single springs installed on oe heads often swim around that much.

Thank you both gentlemen. I appreciate you taking the time to reply.
It did seem odd ball- so we’ll figure out some thing. The installed height is 2”, ferrea valves. These heads are not stock, heavily ported and shaved etc. Make good power though, but everything is a challenge with them. They’ll be for 1/4 mile. I don’t imagine we’ll ever know why they were turned down to .600 ish.

You have 2” installed height with a spring cup and a beehive retainer using std height locks?
