Is a 68-69 SB and BB B body K member different?

Is a 68-69 SB and BB B body K member different? - 10/22/19 05:13 PM

I am trying to confirm but I never think about it when I'm at my shop, I remember being told there is no difference between a small block and big block K member in 68_69 B bodies. IN fact 70 may be the same and the difference in a 71 is the tilt of the steering gear box or maybe that change was in 70. So how much of this is true?

Thanks in advance, Kevin

That chart listed in the link isn't entirely correct. V8 K frames are not the same for 66 - 72 B and E bodies. Yes, the engine mounts are the same, but the angle that the steering box sits is different. I used to think that was BS until I set up a jig, and mounted 3 different k frames from 66 - 70 B bodies, and measured the angle of the steering box mount. They were all the same. I then mounted 3 different E body k frames to the same jig that had not been moved, and all 3 steering box angles were the same. BUT....there was a 3 degree difference in the angle between the B and E k frames where the steering box mounts. Would you notice a difference if you mounted an E body k frame in a B body, or vice versa? Probably not, but back in the day when they were just cars....you may have worn the steering coupler out after a lot of miles had the same swap been done. There's some more useless information to cloud your brain....lol.

Mmmm... dunno if 3 degrees angle is really a difference to be considered as a diff part. Why I say this? My 74 Charger ( yes I know, a diff monster ) got aligment shims between steering box and K member. So those 3 degrees could be considered as a tolerance when part is being manufactured, able to be corrected when assembling.

We know our cars are not a piece of art on precision at factory. Just looking at the low quality of welding seams of K members you can tell it.

So how do you tell the difference between the B and E body k-frames?

I understand what you did I - but how do you verify when looking at the part?

And is that angle difference towards the side of the car or vertically to the floor?

I believe it is vertical and I cant answer to the difference between B and E

True but is there a way to tell a 70-71 B from an E?

That 3.5 degree increase is on the angle vertically to the floor. Ever notice someone driving an E-body and it looks like they are sitting on the floor. The E-body has a flatter steering angle column to match the lower seating.
