Good Distributor for HEI Conversion?

Good Distributor for HEI Conversion? - 10/17/19 03:13 PM

I received this new distributor from RockAuto yesterday and wanted the opinions of people who have done this conversion.I have a 1970 Fury with a 318 2bbl.The car is otherwise stock and has 74K on the clock.
It came with a sticker stating that the warrantee is void if removed! Don't like that at all. There is also a small amount of up and down play in the shaft, but this may be normal.I can return it if there is a better alternative.I am on a tight budget and already have all the HEI parts and a limiter plate to do this with. I think I will get a Pertronix Igniter III round coil unless someone has a better or cheaper alternative. Any and all advice is really appreciated guys!

Don't know anybody that will warranty something you take apart and fool with.

Some vertical clearance is required as long as it is not excessive. The FSM should have that specification as well as others you can use to verify the new distributor's quality.

But in the end it's a $41 distributor, what do you expect?

I target about 0.007" - 0.010" vertical play but like it closer to 0.007".

The sticker says not to remove the cap...not take the thing apart.

Use your 318 dist. Mount the HEI module under the dist with the www.designedtodrive.com plate. reduce the axial play to .005 with speedway motors flat shims. use the FBO plate & mod the curve with light springs. use a furd E coil from rockauto (cheap) #CFD478 run straight thru with no ballast. set this up then spend your time dialing in the curve dead on. EDIT its www.designed2drive.com & it is pricey & you can do the same for cheap with a piece of 3/8 aluminum plate. be sure to use some heat sink paste between the plate & the HEI

I have a blue one too but I ain't sure if it is NOS or not (I would assume no) since it was dirt cheap at RA & way less than your (shown) price

I was told that the suffix X parts were heavier duty and USA made. No longer produced

I just checked mine over from head to toe & the only logo is "standard" inside of a small oval

I don't like the way the distributor rotates and vertical clearance is too loose. Because you can't remove the cap to investigate without voiding the warrantee I am sending it back to RA for a refund.Fail I guess. Will stick with original points distributor , ect. 'til spring and then figure out what to do at that time.

Oh I forgot that 68 was points. Just me I would source a 70's electronic one from a yard (or on here right to your mailbox)

best thing I did to my bone stock 2v 318 was use a reman points dist. from autozone and installed the mrgasket light mech advance springs in it along with a pertronix points conversion.

runs great and does not ping on the cheap 87 pump gas.

I recently bought a Spectra Premium electronic distributor from rockauto. It was an upgrade from a 12 year old reman unit that looked like it had been used as a hammer. Earlier this year I added the GM HEI module and Ford style coil. I bought the sink/mount for under the distributor, but chose to mount elsewhere. If you're interested in it, let me know. I still need to clean up my wiring harness and bypass the ammeter and bulkhead connection. I also upgraded to a 90's Dakota mini starter. My car has never started so quick or ran this good.

I still need to read up on setting the curve.
