megasquirt trigger angle question

megasquirt trigger angle question - 09/15/19 01:44 AM

running megasquirt 2 on a 5.9 magnum.
I just changed the distributor, because the old one seemed to be failing when it got hot.

however even lining everything up, the car didn't fire up correctly.
I followed the instructions to set initial timing and found that the off set changed from 9.1 to 35 degrees.
I read megasquirt doesn't like angles from 15 to 50.

so I am confused on what I have to do to fix this.
Am I leaving the distrbutor in place and shifting plug wires over one?
And that should reduce the off set?
and clockwise?

Turning the distributor shouldn't make a difference, or have I got that backwards?

What distributor are you using, and how is it triggering the spark? If it is a vr type you could try moving the tone wheel to another position. I believe they have two possible spots.
For a while I used a locked one from 78 ish. 318. It had a vr pickup. I always had a lot of noise with it. I switched to a crank pickup and the engine ran a lot better.

it is the stock halls effect sensor from a 2000 durango.
but the wheel in it, was changed to an 8 vane wheel.

I think I found my answer on the megasquirt forumn.
I have to move the distributor.
but trying to make sure I am going in the right direction.

If it is set to 35 advanced. I should be rotating counter clockwise, so that the number goes down?

Yes, counterclockwise just like a stock LA distributor.
I think I was wrong the direction. Rotate the distributor in the direction that it spins to retard timing. That would be clockwise.
Just a note on wiring: Use pin 30 for 12 volt stuff like the oxygen sensor, and use the sensor ground for lower voltage sensors like the hall effect pickup you are using.
