Help decoding engine pad

Help decoding engine pad - 08/05/19 05:32 PM

So, see pics. Any help in decoding what I am looking at would be great.

A 440, has a VIN stamp on the passenger oil pan rail. Though the VIN stamp looks to be different than factory...the pad has the usual machining marks but the VIN font seems more subtle than normal. It is now in my GTX, but not sure that means anything, the VIN stamp is the VIN of the GTX. The engine was in the car prior to it being restored. Warranty replacement?

On the second pic I highlighted what might be hard to see in the picture

Some sort of non-factory stamp. Could be a dealer stamped a warranty block or a previous owner stamped it after machine work. What is the casting info on the side?

It looks like a factory stamping to me but not a typical production stamp you'd see in a car, probably a replacement block of some kind. The WT means it was a water tested block (typically seen on Hemi blocks). the 440 is the CID and the other two numbers relate to the month and day it was assembled.

Compare the stamped 7 8 (July 8) to the casting date on the side of the block. I agree it's a replacement bare block never assembled.

The block is 2536430-7

That's the casting number, the casting date is also cast on the side.

Right, took me a minute to be sure of what I was seeing. The casting date is 8/4/69.

I thought the casting date was on the driver’s side, took me a while to get a good pic of this one behind the passenger exhaust manifold under plugs 6 and 8.

The car is a late November, 1968 build car.
