Air Shocks Revisited:

Air Shocks Revisited: - 07/26/19 02:31 PM

I recall a thread a few months ago about someone looking for air shocks, & wondering if anybody still made them?

Well, a couple weeks ago I was at a manufacturer show & one of my reps represents Gabriel & he was giving out the old vintage "Hi Jackers" running wabbit stickers! I asked him if these shocks were still available? Yep - still made by Gabriel.

I have an original set from my bird that was removed to install original-type shocks. They have no leaks, but need a repaint. I also have an original, still in the box, dual line to inflate them separately, not together, which makes them work like a set of separate shocks, that is much better.

The upper shock mounts on muscle era unibody Mopars are very thin and never meant to hold up the weight of the rear of a car!

Sometimes you just need a minimal amount of air pressure, & would be no harm to frame. It's when you drive all the time with 100+psi that's a concern

Hey, now! I resemble that remark. Lol. Of coarse I had lots of hair back then as well. It was good to be a dumb kid and your Cuda was your only transportation. Of coarse some people just cut the fenderwells out and put flares on them. At least I was not so dumb I modified my body. It was bad enough throwing away oem parts or swapping my parts to another car before I sold it.

When I do drag week I swap on some air shocks for the road since I carry a passenger and 300lbs of junk in the back. 30-40psi in the air shocks keeps it level and really smooths out the ride of the cal trac mono leaf springs.

Agree. I ran air shocks for a number of years on my new 69 Dart back in those days with no harm to anything. Of course I did not blow them up to 100+lbs, only about 60lbs or just enough to get a little rake to the rear of the car. FYI, Monroe Shocks also still makes a air shock today.

I once had airshocks on a car I bought.
They were gone a week later...

I remember a traction/ go fast tip from Tony Defoe about running one air shock on the pass side to preload the springs. Raising that side about .5 -2 " higher (a tuning variable).
This applies to std/HD springs, not the SS ones. That doesn't take much pressure, and I'm sure would work fine today, also.

Yep I don't think Gabriel ever stopped making them. Big item for RV trailer towing, in fact the local Advance Auto Parts had a set and keeps a set in stock year round. I guess being close to I-80 / I-90 customers come in with their tails and wagons dragging along with all of the hot rods in the area looking for a set.

Summit has them for just about anything you can think of Summit Gabriel Air Shock link for '69 Road Runner click here
