Need a small metal part made. Ideas?

Need a small metal part made. Ideas? - 07/08/19 04:23 PM

I need a couple of these made if possible. Any ideas who would or could make this piece. It is out of a 8 track RCA car radio. It appears to be some type of cast metal but I don`t think it is too critical as to what material the piece is made out of. Maybe a hard rigid stiff plastic or aluminum. Any suggestions or ideas? I was thinking maybe it could be made in two pieces. The base and then the upper piece. If the base was threaded the other piece could screw into it? Maybe??

Hard to tell how small that thing is, but I'd guess it's kinda tiny. It looks like it wouldn't be too hard to remanufacture. BUT, can it be "glued?" There's some pretty good stuff on the market these days... Otherwise, "Big Money Lewis" has said he has a ton of old car radios. Maybe he has some he uses for parts.
Good luck!

The base is about a 1 inch wide and it is about 1 1/4 inches tall. It is a non factory mid to late 70`s RCA replacement radio so finding anyone that would have parts for it are probably going to be tough. I was thinking of trying to glue it but the rest of it is in so poor shape I thought of trying to get a couple made.

Might be something that could be 3D printed? But I suspect anyway you go for one piece you will pay more than you'd want for it.

I was thinking about the 3d printed idea as a option. BTW, I believe it is called a capstan bracket. It would be nice if I could find a close replacement that maybe could be modified. this guy had a capstan assy but it looks a little too far off from mine.

My idea would be to get a metal rod that fits inside from the bottom. Slide it in with epoxy and if need be file the step out of the rod. For the base I would make a thin plate to fit on top of the old base and use it like a reinforcing plate.

Can`t add a rod. The flywheel capstan rod/shaft goes up thru that bracket part from underneath. It would help support with the gluing process if i go that route though. What would be a good glue/epoxy for that??

I would make it in two pieces.

Some flat plate of the appropriate thickness for the D shaped piece with the three threaded holes and two notches ought to be easily made on a drill press. If the plate is a but too thick a belt sander can thin it out.

The cylinder I would make out of a piece of tubing, cut it long enough to have enough to press into the D shaped piece and still stand proud enough. Notch the tube as needed, looks like the original part has a cap on it that might come off and be reused? The tubing OD can be brought down if needed by a drill and some sand paper, the ID can be opened up with a drill bit of the appropriate size, if needed.

Once you have the two parts made I would press them together and silver solder them.

It could be machined but it would probably cost a couple of hundred bucks by the time you paid for the CAD file and CAM tooling path. But if you really need one then that is one option. Another option would be 3D metal printing. You would have to call around in your area to see if someone has that capability. I assume it has to be metal rather than plastic but I don't know for sure. A custom 3D part would also cost you $100 or more.

I get stuff like this made all the time for my car projects. I have 4 or 5 local machine shops who make stuff for me. Almost anything custom is going to cost at least $100 since it usually takes at least one hour to set up and machine even a simple part. The part in your picture is not simple to make but it isn't super complex either. Good luck.

Super glue it back together and have someone scan it and then 3d print a replacement... the results will amaze you and it has become very cheap.

Completely guessed at dimensions... 15 minutes,... setting up scanner takes too long

That looks great. So how do I get one made???

In aluminum or plastic, that would be about ten minutes in the lathe and then another ten or twenty in the mill to pop the holes and lop the long part open. If the profile accuracy isn't super critical the base could be finished by hand. Or if you model it in CAD as shown ^^^^ 3d printing would be straight forward. Lots of guys doing one offs, but you probably need to supply a dimension-ed print.

AndyF pretty much nailed it...

Same process everywhere, it all starts with CAD from a Napkin sketch with dimensions from measuring the part... then machining manually, or on a cnc....

end cost: the more you make the less they are, the less you make the more they are....

Thanks, I was looking at needing three of them.

Ok, I had the piece made. It fits well except at the base where the bushing fits in the hole/opening.The flywheel shaft has a bronze bushing and it was snug in the old metal support. The bushing seems a little loose fitting in the opening of the new plastic support and I`m pretty sure the whole bushing will spin with the shaft.
I`m not sure of the plastic material but it seems easy to cut in to so i think it will wear very fast. I tried a small amount of super glue on the plastic and it sucked it up and absorbed it quickly. Now when I try to scrape the plastic seems much more durable. I am going to try to reinstall the other one that was made with a full coating of super glue in hopes it will make the bushing fit tighter.
The only other thing I can think of is to try and drill the base and pin or screw the bushing in place so it won`t spin Any thoughts?.

Based on my industrial experience...

You could have this 3D printed out of metal. The companies that sell 3D printers are always willing to work on a “one off” that they can show potential customers. The part can be laser scanned for dimensions (pretty common now a days) and then loaded in a printer.

But...it better be something really dear to you, the cost of a couple of hours of engineering time to get it ready to print would probably be something like $200/hr, unless you know someone who knows someone that can make the connection for you.

Having said that...the part will be stronger than what you had and dimensionally exact.

The technology is pretty amazing. At work we have our own 3D metal printers that are used for complex, one off, valve components for the Oil and Gas industry. (No, I really can’t ask them, I am retired now and probably wouldn’t have tied up the machines on such a project when still working. We run the machine 24/7).

So, an idea if you know someone that is involved with the technology where you live. Again, the machine resellers that have a demo room are the guys you want (or Jay Leno who has his own).
