Now i am looking at Carburetors and Distributors. With what i have so far what would you recommend for them? I have looked at the MSD Pro Billet , MSD Digital 6A and Blaster 2 coil.
I also have thought of using the Edelbrock Performer Series 750 CFM Carburetor with Electric Choke
SOOO with all that, i could use any good ideas on how to finish off my engine. Thank you.

Re: 440 engine help - 07/03/19 08:34 PM

Welcome here. Alot of folks recommend the holley street demon carb. On ign there are lots or pros/cons with MSD. Myself I like an OE 70's dist (& rework the curves & more) with an HEI module & an E coil. EDIT with further checking the RPM is a square bore & the Demon is a spreadbore but there is an adapter but another carb might be better, hang loose others will advize

Based on your cam and intake choice, I think the Edelbrock 650 AVS would be a perfect choice, more than enough cfm and it would make a snappy performer on the street. In my book, it is hard to go wrong with MSD. You did not mention what pistons/compression ratio you will be running and whether you will use headers or manifolds.

Re: 440 engine help - 07/03/19 09:46 PM

Actually i have no idea. He mentioned 9.5 or 10 to 1? i was going to use stock manifolds but may change my mind and go with headers. I am trying to kind of replicate my 70 SE i had in the 70s. It had side pipes and i was thinking going that route. I know i am stuck in the past lol,

There is a complete MSD setup for RB motors for sale in the engine section. Digital 6AL box, pro billet distributor and coil. Seemed like a deal. I'm a fan of their distributors as it's stupid easy to change the timing curve.

What pistons did he have in mind?

Re: 440 engine help - 07/04/19 03:24 AM

On your deal using the good heads and intake you have there is no way I would put a small CFM carb., less than 750 CFM on it to choke it down tsk
I have play with, built and race BB Mopars since the early 1970s, every BB that is a RB motors liked bigger carbs, 850 to six pack to a tunnel ram with dual 750 CFM and so on up
Your right foot controls how much air goes through the motor at anything less than wide open throttle , correct work
The carb. size controls how much air and fuel goes through the motor at wide open throttle work
Take a look at Quick fuel, Holley as well as the other carb makers out there scope Not just Edelbrock down
I and a lot others on here have had excellent results using the Holley 950 HP carbs. scope
Little carb, little power, big carb, big power grinshruggy

Re: 440 engine help - 07/04/19 12:27 PM

Cab is correct, your 440 needs at least an 850 carb. If you're going to run a 650, you better run two of them.

Welcome to Moparts, before you pick a cam, it would be best to decide on headers or manifolds, the cams would be way different between the two.

Re: 440 engine help - 07/04/19 05:32 PM

Stay away from the eddy 750 and 800. Buy a used 750-850 DP or HP carb, rebuild and roll.

I bought the Extreme Energy Comp cam. Would headers he the best way to go? Thank you all very much.

that cam is better for headers, an xe 274 maybe even a little larger ground on a 112-114 lsa would be good for stock exh manifolds for your application, IMOP.

don't forget a decent converter for that, providing it is auto...

Re: 440 engine help - 07/04/19 10:20 PM

Man, I must have read another thread? From what the poster says, he is doing not much more than a stock 440 hp motor. He has a little cam, a dual plane Performer intake, not the rpm. He does not know his compression ratio yet, but if he had bought some 5-600 dollar pistons, he would probably know about it and what the comp ratio is supposed to be. He has good heads and rockers and was probably going to use manifolds and you guys really think he needs an 850 or 950 to feed maybe 400 horses? Sounds like a recipe for a slug to me, but, hey, I am just reading what HE says he already HAS and is going to use.

Re: 440 engine help - 07/05/19 12:06 AM

Well that sucks to know that's all I will end up with. I obviously have spent a bunch of money on not much. Haven't had a car like this since the early 80s . I am really wishing I went a different route now. The guy building my engine is very competent . I have read and read people s threads and have tried to make sense of it all. He said I would end up with around 430 to 450 hp and lots of torque. I really appreciate everyone's opinions. I should of joined this site long before I decided to go this way. I'll have like 7000 in this thing and it sounds like it's a boat anchor... Ugh.

Re: 440 engine help - 07/05/19 01:41 AM

Do you know what 400 HP feels like in a car that is traction limited work
If not you may be pleasantly surprised up grin

Re: 440 engine help - 07/05/19 01:45 AM

Exile, don't get upset, this is just the nature of forums and different opinions. What your actual compression is is critical to making these decisions . You have picked a cam and intake that will make for a high torque street engine. You have very good heads that would be even better with more cam, a Performer rpm intake, 1-7/8" headers and then an 850 carb might be warranted. You really have not stated your goals for this build which makes it hard to make recomendations. When I made the remark about a slug, the engine won't likely be, but with an 850 double pumper on such a mild combo I believe you would be seriously overcarbed which would lead to poor drivability, throttle response and fuel mileage if that counts. I stand by my carb recommendation as your build stands right now. Also, what converter and gear ratio are you planning on running as they all have to work together.

Re: 440 engine help - 07/05/19 03:13 AM

Thank you. I am just looking for a driver that has plenty of power if I want to punch it ,that it will get up and go. I am not looking to drag race it, not that I wouldn't like to make a CPL runs lol. I honestly had no idea that so much went into building a motor with components that would work best together. I haven't took my rear end apart so I have no idea what I have for gears. I do know that it is a 8 3/4 and limited slip? It was originally a 340 , Ralley package. I have a 2400 Stahl convertor that I was planning on using. I only thought of using stock exhaust manifold s as 73 never had a 440 so I wasn't sure headers would fit or work. Piston choice I was leaving up to the engine builder as I have know knowledge of what is best. I really am thankful for all the responses I have gotten. Thank you .

Re: 440 engine help - 07/05/19 05:18 AM

The easy way to find out exactly which ratio gears you have is to jack the car up on jack stands and mark the tire or wheel to the brake backing plates and mark the driveshaft and either the transmission tail shaft housing or the rear end center section so you can count the drive shaft revolutions for one complete tire rotation scope
If the driveshaft goes around almost 3 complete revolutions it has 2.92 ratio for one complete tire rotation, if it goes around 3 1/4 it has 3.23, if 3 1/2 it has 3.55, if 3 3/4 it has 3.73, if almost 4 revoltuions it has 3.91 and if it rotates 4 1/10 it has 4.10 and so on work

MSD ignitions are nice but if most of your driving is 5500 rpm or less factory dist reworked, a good box and go. As for carb, for mostly street use a 650 AVS Edelbrock will work perfect, have customer 68 RR 440 dynoed at 580 hp, 4sp, 3:55 gears, pulls real nice to 6000 and is good on fuel.

580 w/ a 650 eddy? BULLLLLLLLLL SHEEEEEET maybe 2 of them.

Re: 440 engine help - 07/08/19 01:10 AM

The thing that concerns me is that I've seen in the last five years or so ALL the master rebuild kits come with the low compression pistons no matter what year kit you order. So you have to order pistons from a manufacturer that has different options for CR.

I checked my rear end. It is limited slip, 3.23, has 741 on the case as well as an x. Will this be ok with the 440?

Heck yes, I put hundreds of laps on a stock early production 741 Posi unit(clutch type) with 3.91 gears in my 1969 Dart GTS 4 speed car with a 440 motor and 727 that ran low 11.s(11.17 best at 122+ MPH with slicks for hundreds of runs and some street duty.
I sold that car in 2002 to a friend after I put a 383 back in it with a 4 speed, he broke the rear U joint the 2nd day he had it doing burn outs and never hurt the rear with a set of BFG 275x60x15 drag radials on the car shruggy
I bought the car back in 2008 and have driven it for several hundreds mile since then with no issues at all up
You'll break a "489" case third member before breaking a "741" case with the same ratio and type of posi with the same driver and same driving conditions shruggy twocents work

At one time I used a mopar electronic distributor on my RB motors and ran it to 7200 without fail, I did use a MSD box though.

Re: 440 engine help - 07/13/19 01:46 AM

I ran a stock ish 440 (915 heads, no porting), MP 272 - 0.455" lift cam with manifolds and a factory intake. Best running carb was an 800 Holley DP.

Then we put that same carb/intake on a friend's stock ish 440 GTX, and it picked a a couple tenths and mph too over a 3310 Holley vac. carb.
