62 Savoy Max Wedge

62 Savoy Max Wedge - 06/12/19 12:54 PM

Hello all, long time no see....

I got a question about a 1962 Plymouth Savoy in Max Wedge trim.
When someone ordered the car in 1962 with the Max Wedge package would this be shown in the cars VIN-Number and the fender tag?
Currently I have a nicley restored Savoy in my shop. The car is nicley done with all the good Max Wedge parts (e.g. mw exhaust manifolds, mw exhaust system, cross ram, etc) and I need to proof to the authorities here in Germany that this was all original to the car back in the days (or at least the vehicle in question is a correct done clone).
When decoding the VIN the numbers say /6 car.
In addition, are there any good infomation and pictures online which I may use for this task.

Thanks,

Frank

This website will be a good place to start to find pictures/info on 62 Max Wedges.

By the way, I used to have a 62 Max Wedge Savoy. I thought it was the ugliest car I ever saw. The funny thing was everybody that saw it wanted it. I found that strange. But now I agree with them. They are neat. If you read all the stupid Chevy magazines they talk about how the GTO started the muscle car thing in 1964. How GM put a large engine in an intermediate car, blah, blah, blah. What a bunch of idiots. A GTO has no power compared to a Max Wedge. The most impressive thing about my Savoy was when they handed me the title. It said either 3040 or 3080 lbs. (I forgot which) and either 410 or 415 HP. WOW.

Fake - no slant six cars (by vin tag) had a maxwedge.

Post good pictures of the firewall and both inner fender well aprons - maybe we can see some clues that will also show it to be a clone.

Darrell is the first guy to contact with the vin. If it’s not in his book that is further proof that it’s a clone.
He has missed a few vins in the past (in his books) but I think his database is up to date now.

He says it's a /6 car with Max Wedge goodies on it.

Yes, I believe it's a clone - but nicley done.
For me its very important to proof to our DMV guys that such a dressed up car was available back then. It would be even easier if I can proof to them that the super stock package was a option which would not show up in the VIN. If thats the case all I need is to present that the parts used on the car are the right parts from back then. I have the original super stock brochure with all the part numbers...

Sounds like you can pull the wool over the authorities eyes unless they somehow know that a real vin would have the V8 designation in it and not a /6.

I would think it easy to prove that such cars existed: they've been featured in magazines since they were new.
Plus various books and the websites already mentioned.

Cool cars, clone/tribute or not.

There was a booklet available to dealerships that discussed the max wedge packages and probably said nothing about the VIN code. Or just play "Shutdown" for them.

Here is a 1963 savoy dealer sheet that shows the engine option (426) .

There is no date on it so if you change your rocker cover stickers to 426 the establishment might not have a clue that it should be a 413 up

The vin doesn't have a code for max wedge BUT on the tag is A 9 representing engine code 509 (on dealer sheet). So they can see it was an option for your car if you choose too show them this punkrocka

Remember this info is for a 1963 NOT 1962 ..... But they don't have to know that .
Good luck .

We have similar laws here in Australia , you must show that this option was "available" at the time of production of your car ,otherwise it is very complicated with modifications if not offered as a factory option .
