Core Support Blackout?

I just read the following in forkbook and am curious about the accuracy of the following.

“ Organisol was used on the front of all Mopar radiator supports, not just the trucks. It was sprayed from a pit, below the assembly line, therefore not getting on the top of the support.
It was also used on the tail panels of Hemi Cudas, the hoods of Super Bees and it is a semi, or satin black finish.”


I thought they were semi to flat black...?

I have seen an engineering reference that the use of trim paint was allowed if Organisol was not available, but not the other way around.

Undercoating was sprayed from a pit.

The radiator supports were not.

Look at several original examples & you will see black over spray on top of the radiator support lower flange fairly often.

(IF this area was sprayed from a pit, the sprayer would have needed a ladder. )

I'm leaning towards a pit also. The reason being that the underside of all the flanges is well covered.as though sprayed from below. I can't see any employee bending over to get the underside of the flanges while almost completely avoiding the top. It's also likely they had a gun with a long nozzle on it - remember, this is a manufacturing plant, not a body shop, they would have had special tools for jobs that required it.

Ehrenberg claims the core support was painted from a pit.

I have a yellow 69 that wasn't painted

Hard to believe a light color not being painted !! Possible but just sayin' ...!

Not one of my numerous A, B, or E bodies - 30 cars probably, all of them untouched originals except one - had organisol on the core support.
Every one of them, except the black '68 Road Runner, had the blackout, even my E1 '68 & F8 '69 Road Runners.
Some claim that E1, F8 and other dark colors didn't get the blackout, but mine did.
Every one of them appeared to have been sprayed at an upward angle.
Hamtramck, St Louis, and LA plants, maybe a Lynch car or 2 in there.

Kind of curious if we know how long organisol was available and used for core support blackout? Into the late 70’s, 80’s.....?

Trim paint for core support.

I have not seen Organisol there before, ever, but I have not seen every car ever made either.

For cars with Organisol specified in other areas, trim paint was an allowable exception if Organisol was not available.

I have not seen the reverse scenario yet though.
