14 digit VIN on a 1968 GTX starts with a F? - 05/22/19 10:27 AM

question for the Mopar gurus, I was at a show yesterday and a local guy as a 1968 GTX 440 hardtop, car is clean and appears complete with correct 150 mph speedo and buckets.

what I noticed is the VIN tag on the dash which was FRS23L8A 237xxx, I took a picture of the tag but prefer not to post without owners permission. Car also had its matching fender tag and the correct RS23L8A237xxx without the F

VIN tag as the correct fonts , Chrysler logo and rosette rivets, to my knowledge appears original as dash shows a few resprays and tag was not properly masked and shows , I just dont know why VIN starts with an F and as a total of 14 digits.

Owner was telling me it was du for European export, which I dont believe...

Could Chrysler have mande a misprint?
anyone else ever see a F or an idea ?

There are a few examples of VIN typos (and more) at www.hamtramck-historical.com/factoryErrors.shtml if you want to see some examples.

thanks for the info, I figured it was a typo, but couldn't convince myself Chrysler would make a typo on the actual VIN dash tag. I have a picture of the tag, do you want it for your records? all I would ask is of you to cover the last 3 sequentials, if yes, let me know where to send it

I know of a 71 Charger V-Code car that is missing the "V" in the VIN, only 12 digits on the tag. The fender tag has all 13, you forget what was going on when these cars were built and Chrysler quality control... work

VIN typo is nothing. How about a complete engine typo.I almost bought a 71 Cuda that was a Hemi.Had hemi badges ,vin, window sticker etc.Only problem was it was a 440.This wasnt some hacked up used car.Brand new on the floor at dealer.Still kick myself for not buying it as dealer offered it to me cheap.Supposedly there was at least one more known in IIRC Chicago. This one was a red vert.Rocky

My 1969 Dart GTS H code car has the 2 and 3 directly over stamped on top of each other on the dash tag shock

My VIN doesn't have a typo, but as I was standing in line at the DMV to transfer title in 1983 for our GTS I noticed that the VIN was wrong on the title. Instead of starting with an "L", it had a "2"...The poor lady at the window about panicked. Funny thing is that the guy I bought it from (Bruce) worked at the DMV...
