413 Industrial questions - 05/19/19 10:05 PM

I have a 413 shortblock with a casting # of 2658836, 4.180" bore, it is turquoise color, has the unique ribs on the side of the block, steel crank with 8 bolt flange, holes ARE tapped on the flange, no centering ring on the flange, all my research says the 8 bolt flanges have un-tapped holes? But what puzzles me the most is there is no casting date on the block, only the casting number mentioned above, number 6 cast into the block in a few places, but no D/N shift indicator and no date, id pad is blank as well, just trying to figure out what year this is, also has 1851535 std RB rods, dished pistons and a gear drive gear on the crank, cam gear is missing. Anybody an expert on 413 industrial/HD truck engines?

I'm no expert on those motors but my volume #1 casting book shows that casting number as a 426 industrial block with no casting date codes confused
The tapped crankshaft tells me it is a later, after 1962 RB industrial crankshaft, maybe a marine motor to start with work shruggy

"I'm no expert on those motors", me neither.
Possibly a non automotive purpose.
Electric generator or an Agriculture (water pump) motor?

How far extended is the crank flange from the end of the block? If its out 1"-2" no good, industrial only. Block is strong cold weather block and usually has thick bores.will accept all std parts.

Thanks for the info everyone! I show that casting number used with both a 413 and 426, but this is a 4.180" bore, crank flange is about 1.25" out from bellhousing surface of block, if I use this block, I figure I'd just get a 440 crank anyway, no register for the flexplate, just found it very odd that there are no casting dates.

Quick, put it on ebay as an early prototype MAX WEDGE block, no numbers or dates so the buyer can claim numbers matching LOL beer

I've used three of the industrial 413 H.D truck blocks to build 426 motors as well as afourth one for my 1963 Plymouth Fury with a 4.150 Mopar stroker crank in it, none of them had real thick cylinder walls after sonic testing them whiney
The first one had a external freeze crack that the machine shop didn't find when they magnafux it, it had a crack cylinder inside also work
I ended up junking that block whiney
On your deal I would have the crankshaft offset ground to BB Chevy 2.200 rod size and increase the stroke to 3.910 and run a set of 7.100 long BB Chevy type H beam rods with a set of custom pistons up scope Make sure and have the block sonic tested and magnaflux before starting so you can decide before starting what bore size, stroke, compression ratio and so on that you end up with up work

Thanks guys for the additional info! If I used this, it would be just to build a low budget big block, no stroker cranks, custom pistons, I'm a small block guy, just thought I might try something different, think I'll have to think on this one, least I know what I have and have some ideas of what to do if I decide to build it, awesome help as always! Thanks so much!

I’m a big fan of these engines .... but I’ve never seen one with the crank flange extended. You must have one that was truly an industrial one - like off a oil or water pump OR something out of a large truck. I have about 10 of these and they all came out of a motor home chassis

I wish I was a little closer, Id love to use that particular block to build a cheap ass 472.
The recipe is stock cast 383 pistons, the stock 535 rods, a stroker 4.15 crank. There were only a couple of casting nmbers that show up as either 413 or 426. So the 4.25 bore should be okay. At the time I cooked up this combo one could buy NOS standard 383 cast pistons for $100. That made the stroker pretty cheap cubic inches. Using the stock rods and stock cast pistons I would keep engine speed to 5500 or less and revel in the torque.
It could use a pretty basic head even a cast iron head like a 452 or else one of the lower perf aluminum. 400 hp or less with a high flat torque curve.

OF Course anything you can do with a 413 block you can do better with a 440 or 400 block. But 472 cheap inches could move a big Chrysler or a pickup with authority.
