Doing that right now on a 68 Satellite. Actually we are sectioning them in along with part of the trunk floor just behind the shock absorber cross member.

Just got it down off the rack and for the first time in many years, the rear springs are under the car rather than in it. I used frame rails from a '70 Road Runner so there would be some muscle car DNA in the mix.

I know the welds are ugly, but I believe it will hold.

And this is a fully undercoated car. I wonder what it would look like if it hadn't have been undercoated?

This is the way this car is going to stay except the slant 6 will go and I plan to install the 500" wedge that I pulled out of my Cuda. I was surprised about 2 things on this car. First, it has a 7 1/4" rear and second, it has 15" wheels. It all looks original. Are either of those two things unusual for a car like this?

What? You took parts from a Road Runner to fix a Satellite? Oh my!😁

Yes I did. The frame rails were about all that was left of the poor thing. Literally. It is such a shame that these cars rot to the roof line. I have often wondered how many more Mopars we would have today had Mopar only had better rust prevention and rev limiters.

Re: Rear frame rails. - 05/29/19 02:24 AM

nice work, i usually put a plate on the inside of each side of the frame rail with two big button welds on each side then butt weld all the way around the splice and weld up the inside of the plates if the trunk floor is out. i find it looks cleaner than on the outside but sometimes i do the outsides too. it is not that hard just got to keep track of where everything is for squareness and level.

We put small plates on the inside and butt welded the entire joint, too. The outside plates were larger to cover more area simply because they were easier to get to. We weren't worried about how it looks (obviously). Just making sure it held while keeping the job as easy as possible.
