New Super Stock/Formula 1 tires?

New Super Stock/Formula 1 tires? - 05/07/19 03:08 PM

For polling purposes, how many of you who are serious about the look of DAY TWO, NOSTALGIA, RACE and or STREET on your cars would like to see this brand of tire come back on the market?
I have the ear of the engineers over at Coker Tire and they would need a certain amount of serious interest in order to make a run. This process could take a few months or even a few years, but the faster we get on board with them, the faster these could come to market. Aside from the raised white letter tires from Dunlop, Goodyear Ploy-glas and Firestone Wide Oval tires, I think the Super Stock/ Formula 1 tires were one of the best looking performance tires on the market. Remember also that they made thin front runner tires such as the ones below.

Let an ear hear, what say ye?

Iā€™m in! Skinny fronts and fatties in the back. Best looking tire ever!

Never did much for me, don't care for big letters on tire sidewall.
Heck, I remove the lettering on my slicks; GoodYear doesn't cut me a break for that advertising, haha.
That said, the old Firestone Drag 500 would seem ripe for a re-do but the only market is some of the guys with the nostalgia cars.
Regardless of all that, there's probably a market for the tires you're asking about.

I would be in for a set of the skinny's!

I'd love those skinny fronts and L 60-15 rears on a set of those Keystones for my Bee.
I've loved this look since my buddy's 71 R/T back in 78, he had Super Stocks in front and I think Mickey's in the rear with Keystone Custo-mags.

Oh YES!...I'm looking for a set, esp the front skinny runners.... love to see them repro'd

I'd hope they bring them back in the "popular" sizes, I know making every combo is $$$$$$...but I'd think they'd definitely be missing the boat if they don't rebop the skinnys in 15X4 or 15X5

Cars just look super cool with them tires on.
It is true though, that when the tires came onto their own and were the new rage, a good portion of cars from the early to mid 60's which still obviously running around, started wearing them.
I would suspect that by 70'-71' the tires were everywhere. I believe they came on the scene in 68'-69'

I'd bet mid-'70s - anyone that has any? they will have date codes on the sidewall

there will be old ads & "new product" promotions in magazines like HOT ROD - to date their introduction

not doubting the adds, but my charger had them in april of 1972. [after the snow left] the car was done [finally together] very late 71, very early 72.

I'm sure they debuted earlier than the ads, that's just what I found with a date on it - so far

Re: New Super Stock/Formula 1 tires? - 05/10/19 05:33 PM

I seem to think that on the heels of the popularity of the SUPER STOCK class itself, that the tires debuted sometime in the late, late 60's without the anticipation that SUPER STOCK was going to morph into PRO-STOCK in late ,late 69'-70'. Just my suspicion.
By the 70's, I could imagine many cars wearing them as the new shoe in town.

I found these in HOT ROD May, June, July 1971 (& nothing in the prior 6-month) earlier than I was expecting up still nothing in HR's "what's new" section

I like The day2 look but I'm not sold on the giant white letters. I put pro trac on the front and American racer l60 on The back of my dart.
I wish there was a size that worked better on the front of a dart. Pro trac seem too big or too small. I was there was a firestone that was in between that would have worked, after I bought the pro tracs.

If they make them maybe make white letter one side black on the other, and I think a 26" front is what I was looking for. What would the rear tires be like? Are they a sticky street strip or just street tire?

Re: New Super Stock/Formula 1 tires? - 05/11/19 07:26 PM

Pretty sure they came out in the mid 70's. The first White letter tire on a factory car was 69 I think. G60X15 came out in 70 and was about as big as it got for a couple of years. They bring back memories but not enough that I would buy a set.

I'd be interested...

If they made a true N 50 15 for the back , and a nice 15 inch 70 series for the front.

I'd buy a couple of sets.

Today.

I missed out on the run of Mickey Thompson Indy Profile tires that summit and some others were offering a few years ago.

I wish they would make another run of those, too.

Super Stock Formula 1 tires were black wall on one side and raised white letters on the other IIRC.

Re: New Super Stock/Formula 1 tires? - 05/12/19 04:00 PM

Those magazine ads make me feel like a child looking at the Sears Christmas catalog. Modern RWL radial tires (TA Radial - the Cooper Cobra)are nice but simply not available in the same sizes as the N and L old school rating. A 275 60 15 is almost an L 60 15. But there is no equal to the N 50 15. A metric equal would be a 325 50 15 which is available in a modern soft compound black wall tire but not in a long wearing RWL configuration.

you are correct. i remember picking up sets of those that guys used too much offset on their wheels, and chewed up the letters, but not the sidewalls. those letters were thicker than the polyglas or other white letter tires of the day.
even with john force style burnouts, those tires lasted way longer than mickey t's.
