KEY STUCK IN IGNITION 70 E-BODY - 04/22/19 12:15 PM

Hello.

The key seems to be stuck in the ignition and i cant turn the ignition to the correct "lock" position to get it out.. i have the shifter in reverse. Steering wheel is not locked.

Any ideas?

That lower steering column collar is either disconnected, or not adjusted correctly. It needs to be turned counter-clock to get key out.

Do you mean the one in the engine compartment?

Thanks

Turn the steering collar counter clockwise and pull the key out.

Exact thing happened to me.
Tire place guy shoved key in upside down and couldn’t get it out.
Manager wanted to break it off and call locksmith.
I said no way and had to fiddle with it for 20 mins to get it out.

If the column lockout parts are in place, it is not adjusted right.

If the lever that connects to the column is missing, that can also cause this.

Had that happen on 70 Cuda a couple of times. The reverse interlock linkage arm on the column can move if you are on a rough road (they are all rough now days) and will lock the key in the switch. This assumes you don't have the interlock hooked up. Just move the lever and remove the key.
Hope this helped, Rod
