Help.. Clutch replacement-4-speed 383 70-Cuda

Hello, have just completed freshing-up my 383 mopar engine..!
Was going to replace clutch..
Was going to replace with a stock clutch.. but with a light clutch pedal for traffic!
any one have any recommendation on what Company/ or Brand to purchase!
Will appreciate your help!

Center Force dual friction.Mine has been behind my built 440 for years.Great clutch and light pedal.Have to probally remove the over center spring.Mine still bites like new even after all the abuse Ive given it.Rocky

Chances are your 383 is a scallop cover set up 10.95, I'd contact Bewers for the best current set up on the market, personally I prefer a 3 finger BB cover, but seeing you want a "light" pedal chances are you'll be steered towards a diaphram set up, if so remember to lose the under dash pedal over center spring (unless the mfg recommends it stay).... I'll leave this here also...

I am not trying to be offensive to anyone.
I do not understand why anyone would use the old 70's technology when there is a better (IMO) alternative. We have probably installed somewhere north of 300 Centerforce clutches with only 1 issue That was due to a recalled assembly that was erroneously shipped.
No Chattering, no slipping, no broken linkage or torn frame mounts, no larger left leg etc.

If you drive in a lot traffic and have a lot of hills the dual friction disc doesn't like hills. The diaphragm part is great.

I totally agree with you, to a degree, personally I've tried the dual disc Centerforce, wasn't impressed with the "performance" or "mechanical aspect" of it... but while on the note of phasing out outdated 70's technology, I would think one would actually be endorsing the use of an OD application rather than an "outdated" 883, along with a hydraulic activated TOB if we're looking to dismiss "old 70's technology"?

I just replaced a three finger with a Mcleod diaphragm type and don’t like it at all. It is soft for the customer but it releases different than a borg and beck style. I removed the center spring and it is soft but as you release to the top, it releases too quick. It like the ratio is wrong for a mopar. It is smooth and has no chatter but that’s all I can say. I’ve got a customers car coming in with a Centerforce brand and it was hard to adjust it to not ride on the throwout bearing and have the pedal correct. I’ll work more on it when I tune the carbs later next month. I called Mcleod tech and described the problem and said that was the best I could adjust it because it was it not designed for the mopar. I’m wondering about a twin disc for my next clutch but they are pricy.

This. Unless you want to re-engineer the clutch linkage so you're not driving a toggle switch, use a Borg & Beck plate with a newer disc. Run the plate load at 2400 pounds and drive it.

A diaphragm is for birth control, not a clutch. People evidently don't know that the diaphragm is not new. It wasn't that cool back in the 70's.

I totally agree with you on this one, as I mentioned earlier I generally prefer a 3 finger BB/BBL cover in the 2400-2800 lb range depending on mfg, and I usually run a Kevlar single disc, nice bullet proof combo IMHO for street/strip/road course....

But everyone has their own preferences though, along with driving style/application or intended usage for a vehicle, so there's really no "one size fits all" when it comes to clutches

I just installed a Ram B&B PP with a Mcleod ceramic/organic disk. With the correct over-spring pedal effort is not heavy
Mcleod discontinued their B&B PPs. I am not a fan of diaphragm clutches on Mopars.

I have 2 guys wanting to replace centerforce, both 10.95 18 spline back to borg and beck 3 finger for that exact reason, like a toggle switch. I plan to use mcleod discs, or ebay vintage discs and some remanned original covers. The guy that does my flywheels does my plates. I have been picking up covers for decades. If you have a clutch shop near you go there. Yes the overcenter springs are off.

Well now I feel better. Most people always brag on the centerforce but I’ve driven/worked on three now and don’t like them. I thought it was just me. I’ve got plenty of covers to reman, now to find a good company.

I installed in my 340 Dart this Ram B&B street clutch that I bought from Summit. It does the job and I like the pedal feel and where the clutch engages.
A few friend have tried it and thought that the the pedal felt too heavy, but I believe that they are use to the "modern" clutch feel.

You are not alone, Centerforce is not a bad clutch, never had one that was BAD, just different. It has been my experience that guys with multiple cars love centerforce in the gm stuff, dont like them in their 6bbl and hemi stuff.
