Anyone in NJ want to help with six pack - 03/28/19 01:53 AM

Hello, I just fired up my fresh 340 six pack and it is idling high and I am having a hard time getting it right. I have read tons of articles and the six pack book and am at a loss. I am willing to pay someone to come by and help me get the bugs out.

Sorry I can't offer any help, but was just wondering what "six pack book" you're talking about? I wasn't aware there was a book on this, thanks,

Roger

"In general", if your six pack is idling high, then the carburetors aren't fully closed. A very common issue is the return linkage rods which could be holding one or more of the carburetors slightly open at idle. I would suggest you start by disconnecting the clips on the end carburetors & making SURE your center carburetor is completely closed & the return spring is reasonably stiff. Then, close the outer carburetors fully by hand & re-insert/re-clip the return rods one at a time. When those two rods are adjusted correctly, they should just slip right into the hole(s) of the outboard carburetors with no effort at all. HOPE THIS HELPS

lol

Normally I give Auto books a pass, as different things appeal to different people. Paint techniques, emphasis on particular options or overzealous fixation on history are common. However, this book actually misses the point of its title, including far more information of a general nature than ever explaining its focus.

For example, the Author goes on for literally the bulk of the book on general engine assembly, oiling system, block prep, etc and spends a mere 19 pages on the intake and carbs themselves! Even worse, whole areas of the tuning process are ignored. Should not a book on Six Pack induction focus on the six pack induction, its tuning and troubleshooting? The areas NOT EVEN MENTIONED are not details, but items such as kill bleeds and their effect on opening speed of the outboards. Would an adjustable kill bleed setup be a better technique for opening the outboards for today's large displacement crate engines than changing the springs?? At what RPM are each spring rated to open the outboards? One will never know, though Larry goes on for 18 pages about the Chrysler oiling system, hardly a important consideration to an exotic multiple carb setup.

Unhook the outboard linkage, turn the mixture screws in all the way then out 1 turn. Then turn the idle screw in so the car runs at about 2200rpm. Set your timing at 36* total. once you set that. turn the idle down to about 700. Adjust for best vacuum. You might have to adjust the idle speed again. Hook up the outboards and go for a run. You will probably have to adjust the outboards. By 2 spring kits.
