converting 4 dr Dart to 2 dr. - 03/23/19 09:02 PM

I getting a real nice 68 Dart 4 dr.... and would like to covert it to a 2 dr. Anyone done this or have any pertinent information on whats involved?....looks pretty simple bolt on the the longer door and then cut away the original post and weld in the rear post/fender/window section from the 2 dr car.

Any photos?

Some of us do love 4-doors - just as they are.

The rocker is going to be different. The quarter window needs a place to drain. Probably better off drilling it apart and using it to fix a real 2 door. It's not that it can't be done, but you'll probably take a bath when you try to sell it.

Of course it can be done. You will end up with a post car still unless you intend to replace the entire roof.
Darts are cheap though. Unless you are just looking for a challenge, do you personally think that this is the right way to go?

The entire roof and half the quarter panel and the entire rocker panel is what is needed. The dutchmen panel is different too, and of course ALL the glass, then a pair of doors. I believe the "X" brace for the back seat is different also, and maybe the rear floor where the seat bottom fits, everything else is the same including the inner and outer wheel houses and trunk, of course the entire frame, and firewall also. Let me know if you need all that, I have a rolling back half of a 69 Swinger laying around, I wish I could have saved it being a 340 4-speed with factory A/C... frown

Trying to make it a hardtop, yes the glass is different.

A post car is the same as a 4 door car for ft/rr glass and roof.

Pans are the same

Yes I plan to make it a post 2 dr as that seems much easier than a hardtop style. 4 Dr. Darts are nearly worthless and 2 dr's bring real money......I'd probably keep this car.....Always wanted an A body to play w and cant afford to buy a real 2 dr one. This 4 dr is being given to me for free. It runs and drives 318 car w a very nice body.

I was about to post something completely different until I saw your signature line. I can't have any sympathy for someone with a 528 Hemi crying poverty. lol I'm sure if you wheel and deal with what you have (5 Challengers?) you can get a nice A-bod to wrench on. I would only butcher the more-door if it will be race only. And I mean full cage, tubbed, etc. Only way you'll recoup what you put into it and give it a decent life.

Maybe mess with people's minds and weld up the back doors, grind and smooth, paint, and voila! 2 dr. Dart that most folks would never notice wasn't quite right. wink

Finding 2-door sedan doors and especially the glass is not as easy as you think it is! MUCH easier using a 2-door hardtop...

Easier would be to leave it as a 4-door.

No one is making them anymore.........

2 door sedan aren’t dry desirable. They don’t bring the money of a hardtop and will take longer to sell. Not everyone likes them. I do but I probably wouldn’t bother making one out of a 4 door.

Do not cut that car.

Re: converting 4 dr Dart to 2 dr. - 04/07/19 04:07 AM

Why not a 2 dr post is more desirable than a 4 dr any day of the week. If I can find the parts before someone makes me a reasonable offer I'm doing it. I have the skills and tools to do this so that the only way you'd know it was done would be to look at the VIN. In this case in goes a hot 360 and I keep it.

If I get a reasonable offer I'll be glad to sell it. NADA guide says a 68 4 dr 318 ac car is worth $4200 in middling condition which this one could surely be made into easily.

Wasting your time and a lot of mig wire... here's a sweet ride on Mopars Unlimited (FB forum) $2500, you gut that pig of a 4 dr for all the parts you need including the VIN, swap it over to this 2 dr, someday drop in a nice HEMI and have a SS clone....

All that 4 door dart needs is a turbo small block, put a decent rear end in it and leave as is, dirt, hub caps and all!

I just have to say it.
Hate me, get mad, reply with obstinate attitude, I really don't care. cool

You would at the very least need a 2 door car for parts, as so much of the entire car is different.
Wheel base.
Trunk is longer, roof is shorter, rear quarters and floors reflect same.
Interior panels, seat, glass, are all different.
Drive line has to be different too.
No way it can come out looking like a "REAL"' 2 door.
Swapping or changing titles is very illegal.
Not to mention extremely dishonest.
That 4 door is a nice solid looking car.
No reason not to sell it and buy a 2 door.
Save a ton of time, money, and effort.
If you think you will make a profit this, way you are sadly mistaken.

Just cuz you can?
Really?
Well go for it. up
Be prepared to get totally disappointed and likely dissed on the results. whistling

The front glass is taller too, so is the roof, so good luck making door frames fit.

Rear glass is also different.

There are some lovers of the 4-doors at www.facebook.com/groups/818892378200338/?ref=bookmarks so if this car is just not for you as it is, please try to sell it to someone that does truly appreciate the sedans?

I think I'd sell it as-is. Make someone a cool daily driver. Just my opinion.

I really dislike 4 doors but I wouldn't cut it up. I'd turn it into a cruiser with some 17" dodge charger steelies and a magnum engine.

A few bits of incorrect data here.
Wheelbase is the same whether 2 door or 4.
Trunk is the same length. Trunkid fits both models.
Drive line is the same if the engine/trans/axle are the same.
I do agree that swapping a VIN is wrong.
Carry on.
