removing rust from chassis

How do you deal with removing rusty scale from inside the semi-boxed in area in front of your spring hangers?
I'm working on my '72 Charger and I'd like to clean that area up, but there's not much room for access.
It looks like a wasp can get in there, but not much else.

Do a google search for an "air needler/scaler".
The wires on the needler can get into some pretty small and tight places and they clean stuff up pretty good. How long you want to work the area will determine how clean it gets. Buy a good ear protection at the same time, your hearing will thank you. Unless you intend on doing a lot of it, a cheap needler will do the trick. Gene

You'll have a tough time getting anything in there including a needle scaler. Depending on the amount of rust you could try wire cup brushes in an angle die grinder. Otherwise, try spraying in rust converter. One thing to consider - if you can't see it and its not rotten right through, its probably not worth worrying about. On the other hand if you're that concerned, get the car dipped.

Years ago when Evaporust showed up they had a customer photos page on their website and some guy cleaned the bottom of his car using a small fluid pump that recirculated the Evaporust that he was using to wet down the bottom of the car with. He had a rubber hose hooked up and just moved it around every so often. He had a plastic sheet on the floor to catch the fluid and re-direct in back to the pump. Maybe you could build something similar on a smaller scale and pump a rust remover into the void space?

I think they make an Evaporust gel that goes on like paint stripper. Maybe you can get that up inside there and then rinse it out?

I would use a sandblaster. I haven't had much luck with those needle descalers.

It is “Safest Rust Remover” rather than Evaporust that has that video

It will be tough to get it perfectly clean, so once you are done you could use an internal frame coating from Eastwood for some extra protection.

I used it in my frame rails and the tube they give really sprays well.

Evaporust site just had a couple photos and not a video, and it was years ago when you had to order it thru them directly as they had no distribution outlets established. Stuff was like $35 a gallon + $15 for shipping.

Once it's clean you could put reduced down epoxy primer in a spray bottle and flood the heck out of it.

Thanks for all the replies, it's just about impossible to reach all the surfaces inside that area. I can get 2 fingers in there, that's how tight it is. (easy now)
I've used everything I had, and even made some stuff.
My sander with a 1/2 x 18" belt worked the best of everything I tried.
I made an attachment for a die grinder which was essentially a 1/4" rod welded into a piece of tubing with a slot sawed into it.
I put about a foot of 2" or so sanding belt on it and let that flail around up in there. It must have done something, it made a lot of dust!
I've ordered some of that Eastwood frame coating to shoot up into there, maybe it'll last another 47 years.
By then I won't be caring much about it.
Thanks again for all the ideas.

I've used both Safest Rust Remover and Evapo-Rust. 5 gallons of the former and about 30 gallons of the latter. I much prefer Evapo-Rust.

For one thing, Safest Rust Remover makes a scum with age that comes out of solution, so if it is over a year old, you may need to run it through a screen or filter. Also it seems to deplete faster strength-wise compared to Evapo-Rust. So far I have found no advantage over Evapo-Rust.

Haven't tried it yet, but I believe Evapo-Rust will work fine with a small pump and a $15 child's wading pool. Be sure to know the exact volume so you can add back distilled water to make up for evaporation. You can also keep a part wetted with Evapo-Rust by placing paper towels or rags on the part to be de-rusted and re-wetting it frequently.

You can pay no freight on Evapo-Rust if you buy it online from Northern Tool and pick it up at their store, $80/5 gallons.

Used to think seriously about investing in a sandblast set-up. Glad I never did - Evapo-Rust works fine for me. You can buy 100 gallons of Evapo-Rust for the same price of a small sand blast setup. I recently de-rusted doors and trunk lid with it.
