70 Barracuda Drag Project - 12/29/18 05:03 PM
Hi Guys...newbee here...
I bought that 1970 Barracuda Dragcar that was on RacingJunk from Florida and brought it uphere too south of Bawstin...and hope to bring it too Epping this year.
It is an old build 383-727-513 Dana. I tore the engine and trany out and stripped the engine down to see what I got. It is a 383 30/over with stock rods shot-peened with TRW dome pistons and 906 heads that needs to be freshened up.
I want to go with aluminum heads and in pricing everything out I am only a few thousand from just getting a complete longblock 440 from vendors like Indy.
What do you guys think? Any recommendations on Mopar engine shops South of Bawstin area?
Thanx,Chip

Cool,congrats.
Not sure I understand ,,,,,,,a pair of heads to put on the 383 is about the same as a longblock 440 from Indy?
What are your power expectations?
need a little more of an explanation IMO.

I'd put that motor back together and see what you can find in a complete used race motor. Don't know what it has for valve train and intake. But there is nothing in the long block you really want to upgrade with. Small cubes, stock rods, heavy pistons, factory heads.

Another option to finding a complete used motor is buying a stroker rotating assy for the 383 block, and putting some nice heads on it.
.040 over is a 491, .060 over is a 496..... both using a 4.250 stroke.

It's more than a pair of heads...
Gotta check the block and crank, new bearings, machine work
With new heads, need new cam, lifters, pushrods, rockerarm assembly, shop labor to assemble...
I still need to find a shop and discuss my options...but just good aluminum heads and accessories adds up to $4-$5K in parts

Good option, thanks. I see your running 906 heads?

I don't see much for used race engines out there
