Big block Crate motor recommendations ? - 10/21/18 02:02 AM

Any recommendations for a big block crate motor ? Don't need anything to radical, around 500 HP +/- and good torque.
Street driven Duster,3:55's Auto. Already has a B motor in it, not sure if its a 383 or 400 shruggy

Any suggested suppliers good or bad ?

I believe the operative word is CRATE motor, not a build. I have no personal knowlege of the quality of any of them.

I'm not aware of anyone producing what I'd call a Mopar crate engine. Mopar Performance tried it for a while but those days are over. There might be some folks doing "assembly line rebuilds" with big block Mopar engines.

Might want to check out CME/Carolina Machine Engines, various forms of engine building from mild to wild, they have a "crate" engine program for stockish street motors, but they will build almost anything you want...however double the time quote they actually tell you, as they are understaffed/over booked on engine builds, they are quite reasonable in price and have a good rep for quality work

Thanks DC,
I'll check with them tomorrow. They do have mixed reviews on delivery and quality issues which is a bit concerning shruggy
Blueprint was doing them and we have had good luck with them. But they recently dropped the Big blocks probably due to core availability.
Anyone else ???

Thanks

Here are a few sites I found that say they sell BBM crate engines:

There are a few engine builders with Mopar rebuilt and strokers motors for sale on E-bay. They range from around $7000 to about $10000 and up. Sometimes shipping in included in the selling price. They state whats all been done to the motors and what brand parts they used. Of course I would recommend you check out the sellers history and reputations very good before plunking any money down on one. Just a FYI.

You have one of the best local guys in the business just a few miles from your house, drop off a block, pick up a new engine built to your specs.

Some of those engines are obvious fakes or else really old information. Nobody has a supply of Mopar blocks on hand anymore to build crate engines with. Looks to me like some vendors are just using old Mopar Performance pictures to sell engines but who knows what you're buying. The other websites are selling rebuilt engines.

If you are going to buy a rebuilt engine then just find someone local and work with them.

There are at least 5 guys that could do that local for you if you have a block.

I think AndyF is right about the first link. That just looks like an old web link created when new blocks and engines were still available from mopar. The other links say they are using "seasoned" blocks. I have no idea whether they are on the shelf ready to ship or just made to order. If not, then there really isn't much of an advantage to using them over a local builder. Indy Cylinder Heads is well known, especially for their parts, but with mixed opinions. ATK engines, the last link, are sold by both Summit and Jegs. The 2nd and 3rd links I don't know much about. Was hoping that others could chime in. I have opinion here. Just sharing info I found.

You might just keep an eye on the for sale section on here. I have a 470 shortblock that I'm going to be selling in the near future. So something like that might work for you. If you're looking for a complete engine with a warranty then that might be tough to find. Ford and Chevy build crate engines with a warranty but Mopar doesn't.

Re: Big block Crate motor recommendations ? - 10/23/18 08:16 PM

Get a stroker kit and stealth heads from 440 Source and have a local shop do the work.

Mail order engine is risky. Who wants to ship it back to the builder if something goes wrong?

I remember when people were ordering Hemi crates. All kinds of issues w/them, whether it was Cummins or Ray Barton building them.

You have a PM on this from me scope

Re: Big block Crate motor recommendations ? - 10/24/18 07:49 PM

I was over at my local engine builder's shop the other day and he has five big block Mopar engines in progress. They are all stroker engines with aluminum heads. He also has some core 400 and 440 blocks available. So that is an example of a local guy who isn't building crate engines, but he builds enough volume of the same stuff that he is able to stock parts and keep prices reasonable.

Agreed and I have run a lot of motors through there.
But customers want comparison pricing so I have to give them the options along with the pros and cons. He is always my first choice but the customer is the one paying the money beer
