drilled and slotted brake rotors?

drilled and slotted brake rotors? - 10/13/18 12:38 PM

I have a 2015 Jeep Cherokee. Time for new front brakes. Are drilled and slotted brake rotors worth it and if so what brands are everyone running. This vehicle only get driven around town with the occasional spirited driving here and there. Thanks!

Not really, but they look cool.

Check Power Stop Brakes. They have rotor pad kits that are usually about the price or standard replacement parts.

I have them on my 2011 MDX. I would have warped rotors around 2/3 wear on the brake pads and replaced everything. When it started again I bit the bullet and went for the drilled and slotted rotors, factory pads. What a difference, no warping and I will be doing the swap on the other cars. BTW just bought a 2013 Wrangler for the kids. I guess I'll be looking into brakes once they wear out. Dealer replaced them before purchase.

The "drilled" is in almost all cases, including yours, a big no no, slotted does have some upsides. I don't see how either improves any potential warping issues

What warps them?

Heat

Maybe the drilling and slotting does do something.

You'd have to absolutely try to melt the rotors to warp them; it's the uneven transference of pad material that causes that sensation.
The "real" guys - road racers - that I'm seeing at the track use slotted rotors, not drilled. The slots help with the off-gassing & transfer of pad material.

Or poorly turned rotors, never have a chain parts store turn your rotors.

I warped a set of Power Stops. It took 5 years, but I still managed. They must use virgin steel or some kind of coating because 5 years later, the rotor hats still showed no signs of rusting.

Drilling/Slotting is overkill for most street cars. As stated above, slotting has some mild benefit, but only in more heavy duty applications. Slotting does keep pad glazing to an absolute minimum.

I put the drilled and slotted rotors on my daily driver. I warped the previous set of rotors and this was under normal driving conditions. I had an unusual vibration at speed and rotated tires first. Still had the issue so I changed the rotors next (could tell it was rotors then with wheel off). Vibration went away. The new ones offer better braking performance, especially when I need to “get on them” as there are a lot of crazies on the road in GA. I bought the better brake pads as well that need to be “broken in”. They have been on about two years and still perform as new. I got them from rock auto. I recommend them.

they look good, but as a daily driver, I see no difference. in a recent hot rod or car craft article it just states the holes if not smooth will wear out the pads faster and the slots are left and right. If they are almost the same price as regular rotors, go for it

I have Raybestos slotted on my Ram with no issues but the slots are not straight lines, instead they are curved.
I put powerstop slotted on my 300M and they are terrible. When new, under moderate braking they made a whirring or rumbling noise. I got used to that over time. After winter and when salt started attacking the coating of the rotors and the braking face was getting pretty rusty they made noise all the time. To the point where I could not take it any more. I tried removing and cleaning out the buildup of debris in the slots. That worked for a while until the rust came back.
Ended up putting on a plain old cheap set of rotors.

i agree about the pad material transfer. i know i'm not the average guy, as i turn my own rotors. it takes a long time to get the "warped" sensation, but when chucked up in my lathe, there is usually no more than a couple thou wear from new [i always record the new, out of the box, thickness]. after a .003 cut, back on they go for many, many more miles. having a lathe at home is great ! [getting to it is another matter, however. biggrin]

I like the idea of d and s rotors BUT don't use those harder pads like ceramic in a streeter like yours ... Those harder pads will tear up those rotors ... Use the softer cheapee ones ... So they wear out quicker but they are cheap on FLEAbay !

Bought some brakes for my 2011 Ram from brakemotive76 on ebay. I bought their best carbon/ceramic pads with plated rotors. They ended up being made by PowerStop. Paid about $100 less than what Jeg's or Summit charged. $230 for all 4 wheels, drilled and slotted, with free shipping. I'd see what they have for your Jeep if I were you.
