I'm thinking you need to slightly lengthen the linkage for more pawl engagement into the trans.

Re: 727 park grind - 09/27/18 04:47 PM

linkage adjustment or check first thing to do. also, check the pivot bushings in the linkage for wear. all the button on the shifter does, is bypasses the gate detents on the shifter.

Re: 727 park grind - 09/27/18 06:38 PM

Are you at a dead stop when shifting to Park? If the car lurches a little after shifting to Park and the grinding occurs, it's not fully in Park and, as suggested, the linkage is the problem.

Has it always done this or did it just start?

I have the car on jack stands ounce i put the level in park it will grind then the grinding will slowly stop after a minute or so.i had to hurry up and turn it off.so it doesnt ruin something.it just started

Re: 727 park grind - 09/27/18 07:14 PM

The rear wheels have to be at a dead stop before engaging Park, on jackstands use the brakes or stay away from Park. "A minute or so" of grinding isn't good on parts. rolleyes

Re: 727 park grind - 09/27/18 07:40 PM

The wheel do stop when in park.every time i pit in park it will grind.i know it isnt good thats why hurry up and shut it off.

Re: 727 park grind - 09/28/18 03:19 AM

Its not fully in park the back tires turn by hand at the moment.they shouldn't unless its out of park.the lever is in park not the linkage.hopin thats all it is the linkage not further damage.that grindin was bad.could the bands be out of adjustment?

Are you using the brake to stop the rear wheels from moving before shifting into Park?

If so, your rear brakes may not be working.

Re: 727 park grind - 09/28/18 03:24 AM

Bands have nothing to do with park. Park is just a rod that moves a lever that drops into a cogged gear on the output shaft.

Re: 727 park grind - 09/28/18 03:35 AM

Did you make sure the wheels had stopped spinning after that & before shifting to Park?

Re: 727 park grind - 09/28/18 03:51 AM

Yah wheels stop ounce i put in park with the grind sound.it is one wheel tire fryer.it has 8 1/4 rear in it.

Re: 727 park grind - 09/28/18 04:18 PM

the wheels will stop when in park, but you MUST STOP the wheels with the BRAKES BEFORE you attempt to put it in park. just because you have your foot on the brake pedal, and are depressing it, doesn't necessarily mean the rear wheels are stopped. all automatic transmissions will grind going into park with the rear wheels turning, even ones with correctly adjusted linkage. "one wheel peel" doesn't matter.

Yeah I have been bit by that (when up on stands) cuz your brain automatically thinks that you are "stopped" (& OK to go into park) cuz the car ain't moving.

Re: 727 park grind - 09/28/18 05:40 PM

step away from the vehicle

Get competent, on site help.

You do not know what you are doing.

one wheel peel will let the wheels turn, on jack stands, when in park. They will turn different directions.

Looks like a console rod to me, but did you check for missing/worn plastic bushings as suggested earlier?

Re: 727 park grind - 10/04/18 11:01 PM

Did you try adjusting it first? Shifter in park, loosen the 1/2 " head bolt so it will slide on the rod, push the Trans lever fully rearward then tighten the bolt.

Throttle rod bushings for the shift linkage? Try looking for shift linkage bushings part # 3575434.

If you're talking about the lower rod mentioned earlier, there are no bushings at the rod ends. The plastic bushings shown above are used in the vertical linkage rod.

Re: 727 park grind - 10/08/18 03:13 AM

Ok,though there was black bushings one that goes into transmission control lever lever that the rod goes into and the other at the end of torque shaft that the rod goes into?

Re: 727 park grind - 10/08/18 11:40 PM

You're saying the shift lever looks like the second from the left in the pic below? If so, that's not normally a console shift lever and that might be the source of your problem. Console levers look like the two on the right.

Re: 727 park grind - 10/10/18 03:30 AM

I got that rod in today from the pic i posted in prior post. it is a floor shift console rod,it is the right length and fits in holes.the transmission is a 1968 727 transmission.i cant tell really what lever i have.it doesnt have that curve.
