Steering parts - 09/25/18 03:13 AM

One of the few things i dont have knowledge on is steering. My 70 charger has a very [censored] rack and pinion steering and i plan on upgrading to an original style steering system (reproduction so its still better than oem). What parts are necessary? I have a power steering box, but below that, i have no clue what parts are even used, torsion bars, pitman arms, all gibberish to me. So what are all the necessary parts for a complete steering system? And are there any kits anyone suggests or uses?

pitman arm/idler arm/(2) tie rod sleeves/(4) tie rod ends/right & left torsion bars of a recommended diameter for your app. EDIT on the tie rod ends, 2 lefties/2 righties. MORE EDIT center drag link

I would not bet on a reproduction anything being better than OEM just because it's a reproduction.

Lot's of crap out there.

Well of course, but i mean it has to be a good product, which would have better handling/steering.

So with pitman arms, tie rod ends, torsion bars, and center drag link i can build a full steering system? (From the steering box down and i already have a k member) Would sway bars also be a good idea? Are they necessary?

If nothing has been altered/welded/added that would interfere with the returning to the OE steering items mentioned then no problemo. Sway bars are good/recommended but there may or may not be interference issues. I would suggest getting it back to normal & have an up & running machine then check into a sway bar (type/dia/fitment etc) for your app. As you know the pitman arm bolts onto the st box splines/idler fits in the slot in the kmember/center link is by itself & the tie rod ends/sleeves on each end of the center link just drop into the tapered holes in the "arms" of the left/right lower ball joints. You would get the st box halfway between lock to lock & adj the sleeves so the tires are pointed straight ahead (that'd be a start).
