Engine in 71 Newport? 400?

Engine in 71 Newport? 400? - 09/16/18 02:02 AM

I have a chance to pick this car up.
71 Newport 2dr H/t that was rolled over light.
I think this is a 400 but I'd like someone to verify it.
Vin is pictured below.
The balancer on the crank is what led me to believe its a 400...
Thx all...

originally that was a 383 2bbl car
late in the '71 model year, cast cranks started showing up in the 383 2bbl

I'd say it's a 383 then...I don't think its ever been out...
The car has a Stromberg 2 bbl carb on it so that makes sense...
Since this may be a cast crank 383 will the convertor also need to stay with the crank?
Were they internally or externally balanced?
I just pulled apart a 66 383 yesterday with an excellent steel crank and no offset weight on the balancer and no weights on the converter.
Thx...Dan

I pulled a 383/2bbl from a 71 newport a while back it was a steel crank that’s now in to 400 in my dart

As far as I know ALL the cast crank engines were externally balanced. You will need a weighted torque converter for your application or you could get a B+M flexplate for that engine, then you could use any neutral balance torque converter. I have a cast crank 71 383 and used the B+M flexplate. I now have a neutral balanced high stall converter behind it. It's about $100 from Summit.

Gotta clarify a hair, the only cast crank engine mopar ever made that was NOT externally balanced was the 318, just so someone doesn't misread what you posted is all.

Which is also not to say there weren't non-cast cranks motors that got external balance too.

Let's not forget that there were cast crank 273s as well.

As for the 383, the rods and pistons were the same weight so you should be able to use that steel 383 crank with neutral balance converter/flywheel and harmonic damper.
Don't let anyone tell you it needs to be rebalanced. Hundreds of these swaps have been done with success, just bolt and go.

Of course every Mopar engine could use a touchup on the balance but you'll not know the difference. The usual balancing tolerances are much closer than the original Mopar ones. Yet Mopars didn't have a problem with engine vibration back in the day when these engines were being built.

Most likely the 383 it came with but check it carefully. It COULD have a 230 block 383 like everyone goes gaga for in the 400s of that early era. Yes they do exist and yes I have seen them in the shop.

6bblgt makes a very good point....but "at a glance" that looks like a neutral balance harmonic balancer = 383 forged crank for 71. Is it symmetrical with no offset weight on it? And yes, your other crank would work just fine too. It would all work as-is, but I'd still balance it...but I balance everything.

I too think it is a 383 forged crank. Here is the 400 cast crank balancer.
Also the 383 cast crank was with 2-bbl and auto tranny and has the same style balancer as the 400 CC balancer.

I've never heard of a 383 230 block. Just the 130 and 830 blocks. I have a couple early 400 230 blocks that were cast in 71.

The balancer that's on it looks like the one that Mark posted.
It is 2 bbl and auto. It still has the point distributor and starts and runs great with no smoke.
Might be worth keeping as a back-up rather than taking it apart... twocents

I can't see the weight in you pics but if it has it then is a cask crank.

OK then, if the balancer looks like Mark's picture, it's a cast crank 383. If it's low miles, then might be a good backup motor (maybe do a valve job). Otherwise, you could put your older forged 383 crank in there as long as you used a neutral balanced harmonic balancer (no weights)

Did you end up getting this car? Just wondering. If you part it I need a front subframe. Mine is rusty.

I already got the car...sold the shell and kept the 383-727 and 8 3/4 center section along with the 11x2 1/2" backing plates and drums. I need to find a set of drum brake front spindles cause if I do I'm keeping the disc brakes also...
