68 GTX Numbers

68 GTX Numbers - 07/21/18 05:00 PM

Hi all,

I'm going to look at a 68 GTX today, supposed to be an original 4 speed car but needs complete resto. As far as confirming if its a numbers matching car I believe on the body need to look at the fender tag, window tag, door sticker (if any) number on radiator core support and trunk lip.

What I'm not exactly sure about are where are the numbers located on the drive train?

Thanks for any help

4-speed will be marked on the passenger side of the case.

Remember that 68s are unique

The Body numbers are the SO number and will match the fender tag and broadcast sheet and window sticker.

The VIN number will match the broadcast sheet and window sticker.

Good luck up

I went to check the car out and it turns out it's a console automatic. Didn't check the numbers on the trans as it was in an enclosed trailer but the numbers I checked on engine, tag, VIN plate matched and he had the build sheet as well. Unfortunately there was a lot rust on the car, the floor pan, trunk, rear frame rails all in bad shape. The pass side torsion bar crossmember had a hole big enough to fit my hand through and someone replaced the rear quarter panels at some point but not a very good job.

If you saw the VIN stamped on the engine then you would have seen it on the trans too ... if it were the original trans ... it's stamped on the bellhousing flange right above the engine number at the same time after the 2 assemblies are bolted together.

'68 performance automatics would be stamped similar to this scope

Just remember the VIN sequence number will Not appear on the fender tag that is under the hood.
