65 b-body colum shift (cable) to 66 and up torqueflite - 07/09/18 02:28 AM

putting a bb into a 65 belvedere bench seat with column shift - the trans choice is up in the air.

I do not have a 65 cable shift slip yoke bb trans but have a rebuilt 68 full manual t-flite and new converter on the extra parts shelf.

AA trans lists a conversion kit for 65 column shift to newer torqueflite, not sure if this is the imperial services kit or not but a quick net search shows the imperial services kit has issues.

Does anybody have any experience with these kits to retain the column shift with a newer t-flite?

I know I can install a floor shifter with the newer trans but trying to avoid it.

I bought the Imperial Services cable when I went to a newer 727 (sb) in my '65 Belvedere. After a minimal amount of adjustment, I'm very happy with it. One thing I did counter to their instructions was use the later detent ball spring. It's stiffer, making the shifting at the lever feel a little more positive. The only downside was that it took about 6 months for them to ship me the cable kit. Charged my card the day I ordered it, of course.

You may want to do a search on Imperial Services before you order anything from there.

which is why, when the time comes to adapt a pushbutton setup to whatever transmission i decide on for my 33 humpback project, i will figure this out on my own instead of ordering a kit. if they can do it, someone else [me ?] can with a little effort.

I have the same issue. Wanting to put a later trans in my 65 so I can use a gear vendors overdrive.

I've heard that Imperial services works with their distributors better than their direct customers so A&A may be a good source for it. If that is in fact who is making it.............

If you use the later trans, a 66 column and linkage works great. No aftermarket parts needed. I did this on my 65 bel 2. Even the column wiring is the same.

^^^^^ what I was going to do, but then I found a 65 trans. I would think a 66-69 column would work too, maybe even an a-body one.
Also get the speedo cable off the 66, only mopar one that mates up to later trans and 65 and down speedo. A Camaro cable works too.

I put a column out of a 68 Roadrunner into my old 64 Belvedere wagon, to get rid of the typewriter shifter when I went to a later style BB 727. It was about a bolt in.

thanks all for the info. I am going to see what I come up with at the nats and at least have a chance to talk to the A&A guys.

Can I get a little more info here about using a 1966 mopar or Camaro speedo cable ?

What year Camaro cable is needed and does it require modification ?

thanks

The '68 Camaro adapts the small speedo head from the early B's to the larger speedo head on the later 727. Length is perfect for an early B and it virtually falls into place.
