BIGBLOCK PLUG WIRES - 06/16/18 07:01 PM

Who carries the best fitting, most original looking, proper ignition wires for a 400 engine. Looking for ones with the 90 degree plug boots where they should be. Bought a set from Mancini and they're horrible frown

would it work to add some correct 90 deg boots (new or used) from another set?

Tried that, but the wires were marginally long enough. I want wires that fit right.

Firecore got every plug boots you need BUT the 135° ones when I ordered my second set, which are used on 8 and 1 plugs as far I recall?. ( I'm sure at least the 8th ). Since they didn't have the 135° degrees boots offered to install 90° but I told them didn't install any, because I could reinstall the ones I have on my running set

I sent them the CORRECT measures for 73 and lates setup, WHICH IS A DIFF LENGHT SET than pre 72s

another option, get NOS ones, which uses to run into $50-80 rate on ebay. I got a set JUST to get the correct lenghts to make the Firecore250 ones.

( made a search and didn't float one at this moment... I know PN is something like 388xxxx )

the best way is to get the crimping tool/pliers and components and make your own. I've been doing this since the early '70's. it's not difficult and everything fits; the first time.

I just put the old ones back on. They weren't that old, just didn't like the Accel ones. I wanted more original looking.

I buy the Taylor brand that you have to crimp the distributor ends on, they have different colors and you can remove the lettering with some laquer thinner or enamel reducer.

I have used Taylor wires and they worked fine for me for many years. But I have to admit these Firecore wires I have on my eng now fit great and work very good. And they fit perfect with the angle plug EZ heads. So both Firecore and Taylor have worked good for me. Ron

I prefer a set that I can cut and fit myself. Can't do that with Firecore since they only sell pre-made sets. Taylor or MSD for me. There is no magic in plug wires, or any ignition component for that matter, no matter what their best sales gimmick is. I've tried them on the dyno and at the track...as long as your wires are in good condition, they work fine.

sounds like me! I buy either taylor or msd bulk with boots and connectors and make it. people can change their oil so why is crimping a couple of connectors on a wire rocket science?

Re: BIGBLOCK PLUG WIRES - 06/21/18 03:08 PM

Just found the measures I provided to customwires ( firecore ), measured per customwires specs, from center of terminal to center of terminal. Measured the NOS set I got to get the firecore set correctly done

Coil---9"
1-----22 1/4"----90º boot ( cilinder 2 )
2-----25----90º boot ( cilinder 4 )
3-----31 1/4"----90º boot ( cilinder 6 )
4-----40 1/2"----135º boot ( cilinder 8 )
5-----43 3/4" ---- 90º boot ( cilinder 1 )
6-----48" 1/2" ---- 90º boot ( cilinder 3 )
7-----55 3/4"----90º boot ( cilinder 5 )
8-----56 1/2"----135º boot ( cilinder 7 )

This is to use the stock wire brackets ( which need to be trimmed a bit to accept 8 mm wires )

Different year 400's used different lengths due to how they ran and different tabs on valve covers. I see later 400 wires on E-Bay often.

usually the diff is between pre72 and post73. I got the 73 and lates being my car 74, and those are the measurements I provided.

Re: BIGBLOCK PLUG WIRES - 06/23/18 12:43 PM

Firecore wires will outperform any plug wire out there. There are numerous people like me who have installed the wires on perfectly tuned hp engines that ran so much better the idle alone picked up 25 to 50 rpms. Back to back testing of new MSD vs Firecore and Firecore kicked butt. So go ahead use those other wires
help

PS thank you Rick! drive

Firecore best wires I ever bought, and they will make them however you want. The ends are QUALITY! When the snap on the plugs you know they are on, no guessing with cheap wires.
