Brass Hammer for Power Steering Pump Pulley Reinstall - 06/14/18 03:14 AM

Guys,

I am going to be working on rebuilding my power steering pump this summer and I understand part of that process involves reinstalling the pulley with a brass hammer.

My questions is, for that process, do I need a 2 lb brass hammer, or is an 8 oz. hammer sufficient?

Thanks.

Brass hammer? If it's a press on and there's no bolt thread in the center of the pulley shaft they are usually pressed on to the pump input shaft before the rest of the pump guts are installed and the resevoir can goes on. A brass hammer may break something.

A press would be better, but I don't have one. I have heard of doing it with a brass hammer, any real world advice or experience with that?

You'd be better off boiling the pulley and pushing it on by hand.

You beat on it with a hammer and you'll end up with a messed up pump eventually.

I'd use a bench vise as a press and a little heat on the pulley center before I tried to put it together with a hammer, same as you might pressing u joints or upper control arm bushings in or out. Years ago I screwed up a perfectly good TRW pump by trying to hammer the pulley back on. Cracked part of the casting...

This is the kind of good advice I need, thank you.

If the shaft has a threaded hole on end; there's a very cheap/simple pulley install kit avaliable at most auto stores. It has an arbor for starting it straight on shaft. It usually will work for various other makes of pulleys.

There is no 'press on ' power steering pump that I'm aware of.
it either has a threaded hole in the shaft for a pulley installer /
or has a key slot on it where the pulley simply slides over it and is held in place with a nut

Should not even need to be pressed on. Put it on by hand and the bolt and your done.

That installer presses the pulley on the shaft.

Said installer is essentially a nut and bolt and back when I worked parts it usually came with a reman P/S pump.

Go rent the tool f0r free from autozone

Pretty sure what he meant was you don't use a press to install it. Yes, the install tool "presses" the pulley on, but using a press can damage the pump from putting pressure on the backside of it.

Thanks everyone. I will have to look for the reference I was looking at that gave me the impression that it needed to be pressed back on.

I am trying to get all my ducks in a row before I start and not when I am in the middle of it.

How about a piece of hickory and a hammer? Worked for me.

You have not said what pump you are working on, but if a TRW or Federal and you try to press it on, you will unseat the pump, and it will not prime.

The pulley is pulled on with a threaded screw and rotating washer/bearing. It is pulled off with a simple pulley tool. All the work/forces are on the shaft, not the whole assembly. Read the Service Manual.

It is a Sanginaw pump. I do have the factory service manual as a reference also.

For pulleys like this I heat them up by placing them on a 100 watt light bulb.
Only takes 10 minuets.
You will have to use gloves to pick it up and place on the shaft.

Works for alternator pulleys.
