EQ heads for 5.9 magnum

Any problems out of the box one should know about?

There do not seem to be many first person bad experiences with the EngineQuest heads. There are a lot of rumors floating around and many will show up here, I am sure.

Hughes Engines is on record as saying they need valve guides replaced. I don't remember anyone else saying this. But, checking guides and valve job is a good place to start with any new head.

Be aware that there is a Chinese knockoff that some try to foist on the public.

Brian at IMM (Board name: OU812) is who I would call because he sells them and installs them in customer engines.

Be aware that the exhaust flow is relatively better than the intake flow so the camshaft should be a single pattern or even have smaller exhaust lobe than the intake.

I have them on my 5.9 Dakota and have nothing bad at all to report. IMM machined them for beehive springs and 2.02 valves. Then they reworked the push rod pinch and did some bowl work. Woke the truck up nicely and improved mileage to boot.

I have them on a 5.2L Magnum. Mine were done by Clearwater Cylinder in Florida. 2.02 intakes. Around 8K miles on them with no problems.

So guide clearance and seating of the valves should be checked

IMM uses bare heads.

Pretty basically, unless you buy the cylinder head from a cylinder head builder such as buying a Sidewinder from Todd Marsh, you should look at the valve guide clearance. All sorts of aftermarket heads have come out of the box with too tight a valve stem clearance.
Once you have the heads disassembled it is a simple matter to check that the valves are seating and that the valve job is optimized. Again if an engine builder assembles your heads you are most likely OK. But, I have seen factory OEM cylinder heads with absolutely horrible valve jobs. Not that they didn't seal. I was shocked to see a one-angle valve job with no effort made to blend either side.

There are probably just as many cylinder heads out there that came out of the box and were bolted on without any additional prep work. So it just boils down to, "Do ya feel lucky, punk? Do ya?"

OK I ordered some heads and going to my friendly machinist when they arrive

I have a set I bought from craiglist that the valves seized. Both intake and exhaust are WAY to tight and had to be beaten out of the guide with a punch. It ruined the new motor the guy built. Make damn sure to get the guides reemed on the big side, especially the exhaust guides.
