Textured paint on 1971 B Body dash? - 04/03/18 09:45 PM

Hi all,

While my dash is out, I'm repairing a few holes that a prior owner put in for switches that aren't used any more:

The (black) paint on the dash feels like it has a texture to it. Is there a specific paint I should use for this, that will match this texture? Thanks for any suggestions.

It is called 'suede'. I think I have a paint chart that shows the mix code for '70, but I do not have one for '71.

You can buy the paint from Instrument Specialties in RI

Here a picture of my 71 dash they restored for me.

Rustoleum "textured" black is a perfect match.

There is some debate about the coarseness of the original texture. Some were more "satin" than textured. I sprayed some pieces and compared them to others with the original finish and the Rustoleum is a perfect match. However, I strongly suggest a flat or satin base coat so you can spray the "texture" to whatever degree you deem necessary without seeing bare metal or primer beneath it.

I got it powder coated. I asked and they had a textured finish. Came out real nice and its durable. Might want to check any powder coating companies around you.

Powdercoat is not an option if your repairs involve any fillers.

Thanks for the suggestions/warnings, guys. I may check out the Rustoleum, since I'm not really going for a concours restoration here.

I have had and still have a few 71 -b-bodies (GTX and RR) None used the "suede" finish that I've experienced so far. Service manual says low gloss. All the ones I had were St. Louis built.

TCP Global Color Library is a great website with factory color sheets you can view for interior and exterior colors.

I have some suede paint from them for my 69 RR "(AL-TCP9324(A)" is whats on the can. It was an exact match. On the Rustoleum, it is very close also, but I found you need a good temp to spray at as it tiger striped allot from a basic can nozzle.

If you use "LAB METAL" filler, you can powdercoat

This is very true - especially on the large top surface. I sanded and resprayed mine at least 3 times. I finally got it decent. In hindsight I'd shoot it with a satin first then fog on the texture which I think would eliminate the tiger striping.

I sprayed a 69 Charger dash with the rustoleum and had the tiger stripe issue. It took a few times to get it right.

In my 71 RR, I simply used krylon/rustoleum semi-gloss or satin (can't remember which) on the dash frame components.

Ok, five months later and I'm finally getting ready to paint after making my repairs. On closer examination of my dash, I've noticed that the textured surface has not been applied very consistently. For example, the ash tray is totally textured, while the glove box door is not at all (see attached pic). The dash itself is kind of a mixture, with some areas lightly textured, and some not much or at all. Is this common? Perhaps it was done rather haphazardly, in the same way the blacked-out area behind the grill was sloppily shot? Again, not a restoration, so it's not that important - just want it to look decent and somewhat correct.

Before shooting the textured, I'm planning to base coat the dash with a satin or low-gloss black. I've compared the existing satin finish on the glove box door with Eastwood's Underhood Black, and the glove box door is less glossy. It seems to fall somewhere between the Eastwood Underhood black and plain flat black. Any suggestions for a lower-gloss black than Eastwood's Underhood black?

Thanks for all help!

My 73 didn't have much if any texture. I used SEM Trim Black on it but on the final coat, I sprayed it from a farther distance which mimicked the original finish perfectly.

On my 68 Dart, it was definitely suede and had a lot more texture. I also used Rustoleum "textured" black. I sprayed a clear coat over top of the texture to make it more durable. You could also spray a satin black over the top of the texture to dull it down a little so the texture isn't so pronounced.

Here's what the Rustoleum looks like on my steering column.
