Radiator hoses 69 B Body? - 02/03/18 07:30 AM

'69-383, b body, 26" radiator.

Want to buy new upper and lower hoses for the Bee.

Was looking at Rock Auto and have no idea what would be the best to buy for a driver car.

What make and part numbers are you guys using that are good quality and fitment?

Thanks in advance.

One last thing, shouldn't the lower hose have that coil spring in it?
Is it in there? If not, what material are you using to make one?

I have never seen them come with a spring - I believe intent is to reuse the old one. I make mine out of stainless steel spring wire.

Has anyone used any brand of hose that was junk? I guess I've just never seen any hose (that was right for the application) that did not work regardless of brand name.

for springs, i have used .074dia. stainless wire and wrapped it around some black pipe [1" i think] that was a little smaller than the i.d. of the hose. since the pipe is smaller than the inside of the hose, it will spring back to the perfect diameter. make sure the ends are deburred and "pig tailed" so they don't contact the inside of the hose, then screwed into the hose. cheap [around $3.99 for a 30" piece of wire at the local ACE hardware] and easy to do.

one thing i forgot to add that makes this work. drill a 3/32" [.0935] hole in the pipe, then insert the wire till it bottoms. this starts the "pig tail" and it keeps the wire from rolling around the pipe as it's wound up. practice using a coat hanger first to get a feel for this. if running a coolant with lube and anti corrosion inhibitors, you could even use the coat hanger if you wanted ! i prefer stainless though, just for peace of [my] mind.

Rockauto, use Continental 60659 lower, 60621 upper. Continental bought out Goodyear industrial products. So the Continental products you now see were formally Goodyear..
The spring in the lower hose served only for the purpose of the vacuum fill on the assembly line. I've worked at this Goodyear plant for 30 years. Back when they made the big block hoses for instance. The original hose that went to the Chrysler factory had the springs in them, the replacement hoses that were sent to the dealers and the Goodyear brand were the same hose but NO spring was installed. If you need a spring then you have some other problem with your cooling system. YOU SHOULD NOT NEED A SPRING!
