What happens to a 5.7 Hemi with 3 extra quarts of oil

What happens to a 5.7 Hemi with 3 extra quarts of oil - 01/16/18 04:45 AM

My son Josh called last night saying he was having issues with his 2016 Dodge Ram.. The truck barely starts and when it does, bucks like a rodeo bull and smokes so much that it set off the smoke alarms at the dealerships work bay. The dealership says he had too much oil in the truck.. What? First, he did have the oil changed about 1000 miles previous to that, so why didn't it have issues right after that. The dealer fixed it, he picked it up the next day and as it came around the service bay corner, it was doing the exact same thing... WTH !!!!???? They charged him $1200 because they said it was his fault... If the oil change place did indeed fill it up too much, it should have given him problems right off the bat.. The vehicle is still under warranty.. Told him to contact a regional Dodge rep., get the truck fixed and get his money back.. It is in Franklin, Tn..

Frankly, I don't think there was ever 3 quarts of extra oil in the crankcase.. But, IF there was, what would be the negative impact?

Cheers and thanks.

Keep escalating the pressure on em/dont let up/till they settle up & pay. Most customers ain't willing to keep it up for an extended period of time & dealerships (& other businesses) are aware of that probability. document everything. Holler how it turns out.

I agree that the 3 quarts over would have shown some evidence much sooner.

I agree, any effects of an oil overfill should have shown up long before 1,000 miles were put on the truck, that said, if it happened to occur along with the recent cold spell most of the country is experiencing, the effects of the over fill may have been attributed to the weather until some damage has been done. 3 quarts of overfill would probably put the crank in the oil while is was spinning. Your son didn't drive through high water did he? It may not have been extra oil in the crankcase.

The way it sounds to me, I would want to verify there are injectors that are hanging open. The oil over fill could also be gas in the oil.

If it was running the same way after the dealer service as it was before, they obviously didn't fix it. Stand your ground, take the battle as far as you need to go. is the oil level correct right now?

I suspect we are not hearing the entire story here. Gene

3 qts over will definitely cause serious aeration of the oil. That should send the cyl deact and the cam phaser into a tizzy.Sounds like computer is in limp in mode.Should have started earlier than a 1000 miles though.

Nope... He did is typical oil change at your typical oil-change express shop, drove it over a 1000 miles and then this.... The General Manager of the dealership told him yesterday to not get into too much detail with the Chrysler warranty case worker.. If he did, he could end up having to pay for everything, including the re-fix of the original "fix" the dealerships shop did... Sounds like the GM is hiding something and doesn't want Corporate to know about something......

What quantity of oil did the express change place charge out? If that receipt is 3 qts over then he has a leg to stand on.
What repair other than changing oil did the dealer do the first time in? And was it all oil and not fuel or coolant pushing up the level? I have seen stuck injectors fill up a crankcase.
I would think the oil being high would have caused instant issues, so need to look at what occurred 1K after.

first how do they know it was 3 qts over full?
next did you get a sample?

I would be asking those questions.

What are the symptoms of an over filled crank case? how would I know this matches?
What damage would be caused?
What else should I see?
oil in the air cleaner?
oil in the intake?

The hard start and smoke leads to an injector issue which would also cause the oil problem.

I would think the OP would at least pull that thingy under the hood that shows how much oil is in the engine shruggy But then since people have forgotten how to use a tire gauge they only know how to put gas in the filler neck.
People that don't check their own oil deserve what they get twocents

Sounds like a great "excuse" for the dealership to use. Simply add a quart or oil, or three, and suddenly it becomes the customers problem. With most people not changing their own oil anymore, its a pretty easy scam to pull off.

That is one reason I only use the dealer for oil changes while under warranty. If they are the only ones that touched it, then it's their problem with certainty. Had one come back to me and say the drain plug was stripped. I told them to check the records. No apology, but no charge either.
