2.94-3.23 and an 833

2.94-3.23 and an 833 - 11/19/17 07:23 AM

Who runs this combo? I've got a realistic 500 crank HP motor with a 4 speed and a 219/231 roller camshaft. It should make plenty of torque. It's got a pretty standard heavy steel flywheel. Its in a 3500 lb B body.

Will it get out of its own way, and will my clutch live through first gear?

3.23 was a standard axle ratio for A body 4 speed cars.

Didn't those have a different 1st gear?

There was a narrow and wide ratio 833's, reference our resident manual transmission supplier's websites for applications but I thought that the narrow ratio was for T/A cars and wide became everything else in the non-hemi versions. Tim

I think either one of those ratios will work fine with the 4 speed and torquey engine. I run 3.23 with a close ratio 5 speed and no issues. The 2.94 would be great for road trips.

3.09 first.
My '84 D100 came with 3.21 and a 195-75x15.
It now has a 3.91SG with a 235-75x15 tire, overall ratio is about the same.

Not exactly, A833OD and six cylinder A833's had a 3.09 first gear, the rest nope.

My Challenger has a late 2.47 1st 833. Its running far less torque than you. A 9-1 360 with a 224@/050 hyd roller and 275/60x15 tires. It normally runs a 3.55's. Drives great, has been 12.70's. For a long trip I tried a 2.76 it really wasn't to bad.

You won't have any problems. I ran 3.23s for years with an A833 and loved em.

Mopar used the 3.09 first gear tranny in many SB V8 in A body from day one up until the late 1960s, the last one I saw and worked on was out of a 1969 273 Baracuda shruggy

IS the OP asking about an A body?

No

The OP has a B body, pay attention

I need to improve my reading comprehension.
I read the question as 1st gear ratio for a 833od.

The 2.44/2.47/2.66 ratio on 833's will be fine with a 2.94 gear.
A .25 difference in 1st gear ratio or a .10 change in rear gear ratio shouldn't create excessive clutch wear. The Munchie M-22 "rock crusher" GM used only had a 2.20 1st.

A body 833 V8 up to '66 also had a 3.09 1st.

I believe the Green Brick used that low a gear ratio on the road course.

If your cam selection gives you a smooth idle and throttle response is "there", then, it don't matter what you run for gears or what the first gear ratio is. What you got there you should be able to take off in third off-idle. grin

Gear the hell out it what are you saving it for ?I would not even think of those gears with a stick. If fuel is a concern go overdrive. I figure its just a way to blow out the cobwebs 3.91s 4.10s 4.30 4.56all can be street driven with tall tires Lt
