340 Aluminum Intake Preference

340 Aluminum Intake Preference - 09/07/17 03:58 AM

I just put a 340 in my sons 71 Scamp. 555 lift cam .030 10.5:1 Ported 69 X-Heads,Holley 600 (for now), automatic, 323 sure grip street car. I broke a piece out of the LD4B intake while removing the temp sensor. Im going to get it repaired but wondering if it would benefit me a lot to go with a different intake. I read that the LD4B is better on a 273 or 318. I have a chance to trade for a Weind Stealth. Are there any thoughts on the Stealth? I can buy a used Edelbrock Air Gap at a decent price to. Any experience will be appreciated. Thanks

If it were mine, I would use the Air Gap intake, I think older Edelbrock
would hamper the performance, especially with the cam you are using. What heads/carb. are you using Is this a street car or track car?

I would go with the air gap. Good intakes and you can get a deal on one.
win win

Used edelbrock RPM or Air Gap.

Not a big performance difference in this two. Same for the overpriced LD340. But the air gap gets the attention cause it's the "new thing".

That LD4B has small ports and runners. Not a good physical match up with those heads. A Performer intake is slightly better than the stock and weights less. With a 1/2- 1" spacer that intake wakes up. Don't remember the # but the one that fits the 360 will work.

The Weiand may be a little tall for the Scamp's hood depending on the aircleaner.
My notes are the average pad height on the 8007 & 8022 is 5.41"
The LD340 is 5.12"
The Performer RPM is around 5.35

My opinion is the the LD4B is probably better for street than the LD340. If you stick with the LD4B after repairs, you could open up the ports a little to match the heads. I think the runners are smaller than the LD340 and will keep the velocity up better. The RPM's runners are definately smaller cross section. I have both the LD340 and the RPM but have not yet had a chance to try out the RPM. So like everyone else, its all theory, no back to back!

Im thinking that I should go with the Air Gap on the 340 Scamp and use the LD4B on my 318 Challenger.

How does a Edelbrock TM5 compare? It is a single plane though.

Over the years, I have always heard that the TM5 was not a good intake for the 340. Especially on a street driven 340.

I don't think you are thinking about the Performer. It's not better than stock and there is exactly one Performer intake, there isn't another "that fits the 360". The Performer fits all the LA's and has port sizing a bit smaller than the stock 4bbl intake. Other than being lighter the stock intake is a better choice as is.

I would do the trade & you'll be up & running in no time with virtually no cash outlay. I'm sure it has 360 ports & the dual plane will be what you need for your combo/app & your square bore carb will bolt right on. Keep It Simple Sam.

With a 555 cam in it, I'd look for a RPM or Air Gap as they are easier to find and work very well.

There are a lot of unproven opinions about intakes out there for SB mopars. The best ones are the Performer 318/360 is not a good piece (if you have one, spend an hour with a grinder and put a 1" open spacer on it.). The LD4b is not right for a 340/360 head or an LD340 on a 318 port head is terrible.

These things live on for years...

As I stated earlier, I would go with the Air-Gap with your combo, ditch
the 600 cfm (too small) and maybe try a 750 3310 Holley.

On a street car the AirGap will help to keep the keep the air/ fuel charge cooler, and make consistant HP while driving.

If hood clearance is a issue use a drop air cleaner base.

Wow! Someone with sense and truth!
Crackback, autoxcuda nailed it for you.
I like the 750 cfm idea.

I ran a Stealth on my 69 Valiant for a few years and it worked fine. Nearly the same front end sheetmetal as the 71 Scamp, and there are a number of ways to make it fit under the hood. I frequently used an old Moroso drop-base with a different lid, and I've used a factory-style unsilenced air cleaner with different height filter elements. The Stealth is pretty tall, but not crazy. It also came with ports at the gasket face that were small enough to work on a 318 head, but were easily opened up to 340 size. I gasket-matched mine to line up better with the later 360 heads.

Old pic, right after I got it back together:

I've got a Magnum M1 EFI intake on the car now, and the old unsilenced air cleaner JUUUUUUUST fits under the hood. I keep a big Sharpie pen in the car to touch up the little spot where it air cleaner rubs the brace under the hood...
