1970 Cuda Parking Brake Cables - 07/15/17 05:44 PM

Hi Everyone,

I went to NAPA to get a set of the rear parking brake cables for my 70 Cuda. The only list the front and the left rear. Tried Autozone and Advanced Auto, same thing. None of them knew why there was no right side listed.

My question is, are the left and the right cables the same? If not, anyone have a partnumber for the right side?

Thanks!!
Jim

L and R are the same on the 70 Cuda

There are some applications late build 70 IIRC where the passenger cable travels over to the drivers side requiring the longer pass cable, and both are mounted in tandem on the driver's frame rail... make sure you have frame provisions on the passenger frame for the short cable, and you have the equalizer cable and rod

Really? Are the parking brake cables different between a '70 cuda and '70 Challenger?
The drivers side cable is less than 2' long and the passenger side is close to 4' long on my 70 Challengers.
I'd check the restoration vendors for parking brake cables, parts stores apparently don't have what you need, and their black plastic coated ones look nothing like OE anyway.

70-1 Challenger have the long/short cable set up mounted on the driver's frame rail in tandem, IIRC in 72 the Challenger adopted the Cuda cable set up

Some 70 Cudas have the long/short cable set up like the Challenger ,as to why?...but most are the dual equal length cables with the equalizer cable/rod

Cuda set up below 70/71

Here's a 70 with symmetrical length cables, pretty much the norm 70-4

Interesting, learn something new everyday.
I thought engineering at my heavy duty truck manufacturer employer was an inefficient mess, where the right hand doesn't often doesn't know, or pay attention, to what the left hand is doing. And thus leading to overly complicated, prolific numbers of configurations and numbers of part numbers, but I see things now aren't any different than they were half a century ago at Chrysler! shruggy

Our early build Cuda has the long/short cables. What brackets are under your car? That tells you what cables you need

And, it figures. Mine has the tandem cables like the one above with the gray floor...

Nothing on this car has been easy lol.

Thanks Dayclona for the pictures, they were a HUGE help!!

Anyone know where I can get the right cables?

Thanks,
Jim

The setup with the equalizer was NEW for the 1971 model year.

If you see a '1970' E-body with the newer setup, run away. Some loser probably swapped the numbers to a newer body. twocents

I bought my set from Inline Tube. They have an ebay store, search under 1970 Cuda Emergency Brake Cable. Tired to attach a link.

Agree. I have three 70 E's here now and all have the earlier setup with different length cables and thats all I've seen on a 70.
