67 gtx steering column ...need help - 07/15/17 04:13 PM

Need your help, 19676 GTX changed from a column shift automatic, duh!, to a floor shift. My problem is... When I purchased the floor shift column it didn't come with the mounting bracket /clamp, so I used the one from the column shift. after making all the adjustments to the steering box I bolted the column up under the dash and noticed the plate that bolts to the firewall was high enough I couldn't start the bolts, I went up top an noticed the column was touching the chrome ring. At this point I dropped the column approx. a half inch and the floor plate, although not perfectly aligned was now close enough, Obviously I could use spacers where the column mounts to the body, However I was curious if Mopar used a different clamp/bracket for floor shift columns? I can't imagine, but at this point I am at a loss.

Thanks Bob

Guess I should have proof read before I decided to submit, 1967 GTX, I don't believe Mopar made a 19676111 WOW!!!

No that bracket is the same. You didn't somehow try to install with the firewall mounting plate 180 degrees off did you? (upside down)

If you can post some pictures of your mounting points as installed and maybe we can see whats going on. hammer

ALSO, what do you mean by adjustments to the steering box? You shouldn't have had to do anything to that.

Do you have a factory service manual?

Yes, I use the FSM, all the time. My problem is when I bolt the steering column to the body, it makes contact to the chrome piece on the dash. This is reflected in the plate that bolts to the firewall. The steering column needs to be dropped approx. .5",so it doesn't contact the dash and the firewall plate lines up with the bolt holes!!!!

I proof read it this time I did a much better job.

Thanks Matt ,I feel like I am missing something here, I remember taking pics of everything when I tore the car down.

This is so simple I installed the column, bolted it up to the body mount and noticed 1) that the firewall holes where of, I could make it work, but the real problem was it was up against the chrome collar on the dash. I t would seem no room for error here. Fortunately I didn't torque it down, all the bolts were and are still loose. I know that the lower mount gets torqued last and would probably need a shim.

thanks again, I will get those pics to you.

Are you 100% sure it's a '67 column?

Great!!!

You had to ask, I was sure until you mentioned it. I purchased the 67 floor shift column about five years ago from a fellow member.

It is the collapsible column, I purchased a 67 rebuild kit, everything went very well, all the bearings, etc. fit perfectly. Guess I could pull out what is left from the column shift and compare.

Almost think I had something similar happen and the column had pushed itself in on the collapsible section, believe there are only small plastic pins holding the 2 sections in place and are easily sheared from handling.

Yes, I was very careful, not to collapse the inner and outer sections.

But that's not the problem, if I torque the column up to it's body mount the column tops out against the plastic chrome trim piece.

Are you using the column shifted parts to add the floor shift column?
I wonder if the floor shifted column might not have a different bracket.

Re: 67 gtx steering column ...need help - 07/16/17 11:16 PM

Yes the bracket come off the column shift, but one of the posts suggested they were the same, I tend to believe they are the same. My research, searching the internet suggests they all used the same bracket, but I am not 100% sure.

This isn't looking good. I will talk to a few locals and hope for and answer. If I put a 1/2 inch shim between the bracket and the frame mount it would work, but I prefer to have it installed as per the manufacturers specs.

Hey, just had a thought on this. I think I know your problem.

The column bracket has 3 bolts, the bolt that is by itself further under the dash bolts to a braket attached to the pedal assembly. This bracket is adjustable where it bolts to the pedal assembly (2 studs), it probably need ti be loosened and adjusted up.
