Radiator Catch Cans

Radiator Catch Cans - 07/12/17 03:36 AM

After dumping $280 worth of Evans into my new radiator I started thinking I'd be smart to get a catch can to keep the liquid gold from hitting the pavement. What type catch can do you use and what capacity is right for a 3 row 26" core radiator on an RB engine?

26" 3-Core aluminum Champion. Trust me. with an empty block, heater core, hoses and radiator and an RB block, it will take 6 gallons ish. At the local speed shop this stuff is $42 a gal.

I use the one forphorty uses on my race cars, they do their job.

would considering using a factory style overflow jug that returns any overflow back to the system during cooldown be a possibility ? if so, you would need a late style, double gasket cap, and a tank or can that has the overflow tube positioned near the bottom of the can so when the liquid cools, it is drawn back into the radiator via suction.

Take into account the expansion for 6 gal at 200*F and that would be the size of the tank.imo

I have no idea what the expansion rate of Evans coolant is but the idea has merit.

A recent technical enquiry to Evans resulted in the following replies:

Q1. What is the coefficient of thermal expansion over range -20degC to +120degC,

A1. The co-efficient of expansion of water based 50/50 standard automotive antifreeze is approximately 5% by volume, Evans Waterless Engine Coolant is approximately 6% by volume.

Q2. Is this expansion consistent across that temperature range?;

A2. Yes, this expansion rate is consistent across these temperature ranges and again similar to that of 50/50. The 6% by volume figure is based on the high end of the temperatures that you have stated above.

I just ordered the Hyundai 1, $15 shipped, I'll post how it works out.
I'll have to figure out a way to mount it.
