Trying to start 69 d100 what is the minimum I need to start it - 07/03/17 07:54 PM

Hello, I have a 69 d100 that I am trying to get started. Been sitting for years, the prior owner started a new wing harness and never finished. I'm trying to get the engine running and complete it from there but I do not trust the wiring.

I've got the starter working and now trying to get spark which I can't seem to get. It has a stock coil and msd 6a box. Any way to test these as I couldn't find anything? Also is there something I can pick up cheap and get this running instead of keeping the msd?

Thanks
Ryan

Points distrubutor is pretty simple to make a spark with. Dist wire to neg side of coil. 12volts to + side of the coil, distributor grounded to block, should be sparking. The hold down clamp will ground it to the block.

Hard to make it any easier than that. Forget the msd right now, get it running so it starts right up, then get fancy later.

Ok thanks, and I take it my best bet is to go junkyarding and try to find a points for a 318?

Well all small block Mopar distributors are the same dimensions. 273 318 360. What distributor do you have now?

It is the stock 318 distributor going to a msd 6a box and stock coil.

A stock points distributor? Why not use that one?

The distributor is for an electronic ignition

with what you have, confirm that it is wired right, if with the MSD/OE coil you tie the ign1 blue wire (run) circuit to the ign2 brown wire (crank) circuit then T from them to the coil positive primary & do/check the rest of the MSD basic wiring. both the MSD & the coil need to be hot in cranking and in run.

Try turning the key in the run position and jump the starter relay to crank the engine. Some times you won't get spark in the start circuit but will in the run. Be sure it's out of gear and the brake is on just in case it fires off.

the start circuit needs 12volts to the coil to get the car to start. then, the run circuit switches to around 9volts to the coil running through the ballast resistor. providing the wiring is correct.

If its a manual trans, you may wanna confirm the clutch disc isnt stuck to the flywheel/ pressure plate.

It is not stock for that truck. Is it a later engine?
