The big motor question. - 02/22/09 11:53 PM

Hey guys, here goes,I have a 69 super bee 3.91 gears, 2,800 stall auto,383 stock.I have a 67 440 engine to build. My combo so far is indy rotating [Edited by Moparts - Keep it clean].440cu to 500cu.I want at least 10to1 to 10.3to1 comp.I was thinking of running the edelbrock rpm hesds and intake. My problem is cam choice.I want a drag car idle but I dont want to over cam itand I still want to drive from town to town with no problems.I hate going to car shows and having a car that idles like a station wagon. So this is what I have so far.
comp.xe284h
240 246 .507 .510 110 2,300 to 6,500rpm
or
lunati60304 voodo
234 242 .513 .533 110 2,200 to 6,400rpm
with tti headers 1 7/8 inch
Has anybody ran these cams? or is there a better cam out there for my set up?
I also thought of ordering a custom grind thumper cam from comp. cams.Any way I would like to hear your thoughts. Thanks R.B.

Well you could put a good cam in it that will make plenty of power and then when you go to a car show maybe just pull off a couple of plug wires so everyone thinks you have a big cam in it. Then when nobody is around you can hook the plug wires back up and have plenty of cruising power on hand.

I would think something in the low 240's intake duration like the comp you listed would fit the bill. In a stroker, the cam acts smaller. Instead of 2300-6500 RPM the comp would be more like 2100-6000 RPM with Ed heads.

Comments are based on running a 243 @ .050 solid with a 108 CL in a 496 @ 10.2 CR. I would expect the idle to be clearly noticable but not radical.

My combo is nearly identical to your planned build except I have a little looser converter. I have ran 7 different cams in it to date, starting in the 240* range. I now have a Scott Brown solid that is .597/.593 and 263*/273*. I think it is very streetable after making 2 important adjustments. Idling in gear is the biggest challenge for this size cam. I have about 28* advance at idle and had PTC loosen up the converter to let it idle higher.
If you like a bumpy idle but still want tolerable steet manners, the cams I have had in the .580ish and 250*ish range may fit the bill. With uncut Eddies, the cam will pull good to about 5,800.
With an A&A 5,800 RPM governor, I leave my car in drive and (with good tires) ran consistent 7.2s with this combo in my 70 Cuda.
I have been buying my cams from Scott Brown and my converters from PTC because they know what to send me to perform like I ask. Call Scott Brown, tell him what you want the cam to do, and that's what you'll get.
Oh, and I think the hedders are a little small.

Thanks for the info.dave&ahy it sounds a lot better than andyfs idea.Do you think I should go the extra money and run the indy ez heads instead or is it worth it for a street car.
indy ez
270cc int. 2.19 valve
eddies rpm
210cc int. 2.14 valve
and a 2 inch tube header
Any other hot sounding streetable 440 combos out there that will make 500hp or better?

Go with the 285-HL instead of the 284-H. No reason not to go for the little more aggressive version of the same cam. IMO that's a good sized cam for your compression and engine size and should give you that idle you are looking for. If it's still not enough idle, add a set of header cutouts.

any other 440 lopey idle,500+hp street combos out there. We dont like the sound of honda cars at the stop light,or stock v-8s either.

As noted, the more cubes, the bigger the cam needs to be...You need to decide on the cubic inches, and how far your going with the heads. From there, we can give you a better idea.

My favorite cam in a street strip +0.030" 440 was the MP 0.590", but in a bigger engine, you will want more. The limiting factor on the street with all cams IS the convertor. Too tight, and the engine will be a dog and even difficult to drive, too loose, its no fun either.

We just need a little more to go on.

Yup. I've got the XE275HL in my almost 440 (383 stroker) and with stock eddy's it made 505 hp/535 tq on the engine dyno at a shop that's known for having accurate numbers (not over inflated numbers) if you're going with a 440 stroker, up around 500 inches, then you could go up a step or 2 from the cam that I have.

the XE275HL idles nice, has enough lope to let you know it's not stock, and still made enough vacuum to operate my power brakes when I had the booster on the truck.

hey 70 cuda, what pistons are you running and what comp. did you end up with?Do you have a stall converter in your set up?

What kit? More precisely, what stroke do you want to use? I'd run higher static ratio if it's a 4.25 stroke and RPMs. You wont have good drivability and poor idle... And the cam's you listed are smallish for even the 3.915 stroke IMO.
