I need traction on an A-Body!!!!!!

Hey guys the loss of traction at 50mph shifting into second put my rear end at 10;00 o'clock on me and I could not recover this, so unfortunately after a left to right 180 ending up in a deep ditch leaves me with P&B body work to do and needing suspension work. What do I need to do to run at least a 285 wide tire on a 10'' wheel? thx

Tub it and move the springs in.

What car? A Duster, Dart Sport or 2nd Gen Barracuda has more generous wheel wells than a 1st Gen Dart.

Weight distribution will help. Battery in trunk, lighter engine and/or accessories and lighter body panels for example.

Have you ever lost traction at 50MPH that was fierce? Probably not, You must be the person doing the speed limit in the left lane.. We build these cars to perform, not just sound like a busted muffler.. This 68' Barracuda FB will make you go back and drive your Camry. Please think about that and do not respond to me. OK, OK...lets get back on the subject. What tires and suspension are you currently running and (seriously) how far ($$$) are you willing to go to fix it??? Might be a better subject for the race section....

Well I know that I need wider wheels & good tires, this car has OE suspension. I don't know if only relocating the leafs will allow for a 10" wheel with proper offset, which will be fine for me because I can get a nice tire or if I need to do more drastic work than that, 4-link which I rather not do. So, I guess the question should have read what is the widest wheel that can be used on a 68' FB Barracuda with OE suspension? This is a street strip car.

My 69 Cuda is Mini tubbed and I run a 10" rim with a 7" BS

So what is your engine setup? Just curious.

I am sure you have a regular radial tire, if it really has that much power the drag radial will take care of it. If you have the problem of jerking the steering wheel when you jam gears it will not fix it lol.

My 68 Barracuda has about 580HP. It will blast a Radial TA off at 50mph on the street. It will hook a drag radial at almost any speed on a good surface.

Just adding a bigger tire is not necessarily going to cure anything. How is the car setup, what tires and sizes. What t- bars and leaf springs? Shocks? The suspension keeps the tires planted to the pavement. If you are on pavement with gravel or pebbles on it no tire, suspension combo will keep it on the road. Performance driving on the street is a crapshoot.

This is an exaggerated example: If you have slant 6 leaf springs and t- bars, worn out front end that pulls left, rear end raised front lowered, 500 horsepower and TA's with minimal tread it will spell guaranteed problems.

The engine setup is a simple 410 stroker, 4" Eagle crank, KB pistons, 3" magnaflow exhaust,hydraulic roller cam, 750 dp mechanical carb, Msd pro billet distributor & digital 6AL electronics, B&M 727 TF, clutch type power lock on a 489 8.75 w/3:55's. What width wheel and BSM are you running?

Mostly street? Mostly strip? What is you plan for the car? Mostly street, no tire size can overcome say a bump that upsets the car, the painted lines, sand, and on and on....for your combo i wouldn't think you need to alter anything like the leaf springs or mini tub it. I drive my 68 fastback on the street a good bit with a stupidly small tire. F70-14 redline. On the street it will spin all the way through second. You have to be right on top of it or as you know you end up in the ditch. The biggest sticky tire in the stock wheel well should be enough. I see what my big tires are and list the size

Yessir mostly street, I guess I will just take measurements and get the proper offset wheel built and combo it up from there. Like you said stay on top of it, this was a big surprise for me when this happened.

Yup! I was in the left lane on the highway, put my foot in it car shifted into 2nd as the left rear tire was on the painted line. Car move left toward the median at the speed of light!!! Stopped it before it went to far, but still a learning experience!!!

I had this happen to me in a 71 challenger with M-50-14" tires on it racing a girl in a firebird at 2 am. I wrapped my car around a telephone pole on the passenger side right after I shifted into 2nd gear. Totaled the car and lucky no one was with me.

After that I learned to drive better.

What size tires, and what kind are you running now? There are plenty of sticky street legal tires out there, and you'll have to figure out what offset rim to get and tire size but an 8 inch rim should work. Had stock 15x8 warlock rims on a 69 dart.

You need more practice on lifting the right foot quickly a little, not all the way off though, to regain traction and steering under severe loss of traction
My old pump gas Duster made 560 HP to the rear wheels(727 HP and 720 Ft. Lbs. torque to the flywheel) it would get loose in a heart beat on the 315x60x15 (on ten inch rims) M/T ET Street radials, not so on the same size ET street bias plys tires on the street
The radials where quicker and faster at the track than the bias ply where
That car was a ladder bar with coil overs and a diagonal link with full wheel tubs.

My Wheels are 15x8 with a 3 5/8" Back space.

28x10.5 slick or 275/60 fits perfect.

This is the only pic I have and its obviously not at rest but its the only pic I have since I went to the taller tires.
