Hughes Valve Spring Question?

Hughes Valve Spring Question? - 06/04/08 10:15 PM

I am assembling an engine.

Can I run the 1105 HUGHES valve springs with the stock retainers?

The springs are definately larger in OD than stock, but there is no mention of requiring new retainers when using the springs so I am not sure of what to do.

I am just making sure.

Thank you for your help.

make sure the retainer step fits the spring inner diameter and isn't sloppy. Many springs and retainers have s lightly different outer diameter.

I just mic'd them and the reading I have states that the ID of the spring is 1.125. The retainer OD (the part that goes down inside the spring) is 1.00.

So there is a .125 difference.

Any thoughts on that? Seems a bit high to me.

The step needs to fit the inside of the spring snugly. No side to side movement.

OK. So I need to either get some new retainers or find another spring.

It looks like they offer a spring retainer that has the dimensions needed.

I will call them during the day.

I thought I would update. I called and they said the stock ones would be fine for my low RPM engine. However, after looking at it, I don't think so. I don't want an .125 of slop in there. When I assembled the heads you could see how the springs were not centered under the retainers. I don't want to drop a valve for obvious reasons.

Is there anything special about Mopar retainers for BB's or can I just order some 1.5" OD retainers from comp such as these?

Comp Cams #249-744-16

Any recommendations?

I'd get the retainers and locks Hughes recommends for that spring.

The problem is that the ones that they list are plus .075 of an inch which lower my seat pressure more than I need. I am right there now where I need to be.
