1969 Hemi 4 speed starter.

I was wondering if my research is correct regarding a 1969 Hemi 4 speed starter..that with the 4 speed only an original factory direct drive starter will fit and work with the 4 speed?
There are no other solutions?

It was from a discussion on the differences in bellhousings between Hemi's and B/RB motors. Apparently, the Hemi uses a unique 8-bolt 172 tooth flywheel, a unique bellhousing and unique starter.

Besides the bell housing and 172 tooth flywheel, the tooth pitch is also different.

I think some of the direct drive starters from other Mopars (industrial, early manual trans slant sixes) would work if the pinion gear is changed out to one with the correct pitch.

Can't find an OEM Hemi starter? The easy solution is to go aftermarket.

That explains a lot and very helpful. It probably explains why the perfectly good original bellhousing was not in the car but came with it, and the car had a different one in it. Have to look at it and see what it is. The owner passed away and his brother couldn't tell me much about any of it.

Yup, specific to 66-69 4-speed cars.
I have a nice used one left over from mine, but I'd recommend the RobbMc starter; I swapped one in to replace my DD starter, and it's much better: spins more quickly, smaller, and lighter.

Try finding a starter for a 64 300 with a manual in 1988.

Nothing but gear reduction ones listed. Ended up having to get mine rebuilt.

I have the Rob mc on mine, good solution, I was hoping to use a common starter however it hits the manifolds since the bell housing is larger.
