Carter BBD model number (2300 on my 68 D100)

I was trying to find a carb kit for my Carter 2 barrel but I am having trouble figuring out the model. Under the Carter manufacturing info on the side of the carb is 2300. When I try to locate a kit for the truck (1968 D100 318 4-speed) I cannot find that number.

When I look up 2300, I see late 1950's Chrysler.

I understand that someone could have changed it out, but wondering if I have not located the actual part number...... When I ordered a kit for it about 9 years ago, most of the gaskets did not fit which tells me that maybe it has in fact been switched.....

Just from the pics, with the bowl vent, I would say that the carb is a early-mid 70's piece . . . most BBD kits should fit, those carbs are wayyyyy easy to rebuild, and usually don't screw up . . . good luck . . .

Agreed, it is a 70's piece. the metal part number tag is missing. there MAY be that number in addition stamped on the base but you woulda found it if so. Have your parts man check thekits available for the spread of years in that time frame for BBD's & make your best choice & likely you will be fine. the needle and seat is mainly what you need & correct gaskets & I like to measure all dimentions before/as I tear it down so I can duplicate them if there is a discrepency cuz dimentions dont change just from a carb needing rebuilding. if it is a phenolic float I would replace it also (sold seperately). EDIT #1 compare the old parts to the new parts before tossing anything.

Make sure the throttle shaft bushings are not worn out in the base plate. BBD's are notorious for that and it will drive you crazy trying to tune it. It will run fine until you come to a stop, then it will die, start right back up and run fine until you stop again.

If it helps at all that's a Carter BBD 1.1/4 carb. I suspect a '71 model, probably from a car. I "think" they went to the Holley 2245 series for small blocks in 1972. Memories are getting a bit fuzzy...

Thats about right. Its definetly a BBD 1-1/4 and since it has an external bowl vent that uses a hose on it that went either to the charcoal canister or the valve cover breather it should be from about a 71 to a mid 70 vehicle. I also remember the 318's going to the Holley 2 venturi carb that sorta looked like the BBD. My 83 Rancharger with the 318 had the Holley carb. One thing I hated was even when I had the carb number and the parts stores would say they cant find the number. That happened more then once over the years. Good luck as I would think any kit for a 71 or 72 BBD 1-1/4 should work. Ron

Be careful there are Rochester built Carter style carbs for 318s out there only for one year or so I think it was 1972. They don't share much of anything I happen to have a couple carbs that would fit that truck remans sell them just to get rid of them

They actually used Rochester 2GC 2 venturi carbs on some 318's sometime around 1972 like you said. But these were actually the Rochester 2GC carb and not a Rochester built Carter. I saw a few working in the dealer and it surprised me as I had to look it up in the service manual because at first I thought someone swapped it on. I had heard that Carter ran short on there carb demands that year so they used the Rochester 2GC on some 318's. In the later years of the late 70's or 80's when Carter was going under Mopar also used the Rochester Quadrajets on 360 engines that were using the Thermoquad. Ron

sometimes the cluster gaskets dont fit exactly right (kits are mass produced) & can use a slight bit of trimming (check your old ones) so that they lay under there flat/not pressing on any of the brass tubes/no holes/passages partly obstructed. EDIT I put some light oil on the carb bowl mounting bolts especially if they might be removed in the future for jet/rod changes
