Electric Fan for 26" Radiator

Electric Fan for 26" Radiator - 02/20/17 05:20 AM

I have a Champion 26" radiator and got the champion electric fans. They don't seem to be pulling enough air(dual 12" fans). I want to go with the contour fans people have been using Dorman 620-104. I have a Ron Francis AR-99 controller already. Can I use this controller with the Dorman fans? Should I wire them up separately like I had the champion fans? They would only have one speed then. It also seems possible to use the controller I have then up together but I don't know.

Thanks for your help and advice

On my 63 Plymouth I use the stock waterpump setup. I added a pusher electric fan in front of the rad because when I got stuck in traffic for a good bit it would creep up to 200 to 205. So I added this fan and it works nice. I have it on a toggle switch which controls a relay ground and I just hit the switch when stuck in traffic. It works nice as it keeps the temp below 200 in traffic. I bought it at our local speed shop called Md Performance. Ron

I am not familiar with that controller. However, I suspect you could likely run it to the low-speed fans and just put a manual over-ride relay to kick on the high speed if you ever need to.

I wired my car for the Contour fans and have high and low speed relays based off of ECU control. You could also get something like a Derale PWM controller, hook it to the high speed circuit and vary it's speed via Pulse-Width Modulation.

The AR-99 controller is rated at 40 amps. Those who have measured the current draw of the Contour fan claim that the fans pull 22 amps each at start up, 9.5 amps running, so starting both fans at the same time would overload the controller relay; if you want to run both fans simply start the fans at different temperatures.

My Ar-99 is rated at 70 amps total. It has 2 circuits(each circuit has its own 40 amp relay), and they don't start at the same time it is integrated in controller to reduce peak load.

Thanks for the advice guys. Im going to use my AR-99 controller and wire the fans up separately. I will let you know how it goes.
Fans come Friday.

Got the fans (Dorman 620-104) installed and wired today. I used a Ron Francis dual fan controller and wired up each fan separately. These fans seem to move much more air than the champion fans. These fans can be wired in several different ways to get them to work the way you want them to.

Thanks again Moparts guys
