3.9 v6 bell on 318 & 833OD..flywheel question..10.5 clutch? - 11/20/16 09:42 AM
My teenager is building a 64 sweptline. He put a 318 in it with a 90 3.9 v6 bell and a 833OD 4 speed. After bolting the starter in...we tapped it over and the starter just freewheeled. Pulled the dust shield off and realized there is like a 1/2" gap between the side of the starter gear and the flywheel teeth. Wish I would have checked that before he bolted it in the truck!
When we bought the bell, I thought all smallblocks were 130 tooth flywheels. I guess not.
After searching posts...it appears he needs a 143 tooth internally balanced flywheel. I'm having trouble finding one except the $500 centerforce one...plus, I would like it to accept a 10.5 clutch since he already bought/installed a brand new one (on the 130tooth flywheel we have). Does such a thing exist? Anyone know where to find one?

I found this LUK flywheel: LFW106
https://www.summitracing.com/parts/luk-lfw106/applications/http://schaeffler.opticatonline.com/part/bbzh-luk-lfw106?ctx_bv=1776&ctx_region=usa&ctx=1I "think" its a 143 tooth..and pictures show it drilled for 2 clutch patterns...but I cant confirm. But I guess that could be a 11" and 12" pattern. Can anyone even confirm if this is a 143 tooth flywheel that takes a 11" clutch?
And confirm a LUK-05-038 is an 11" clutch?

Buy a flywheel for a 90 V6, it'll bolt onto the 318, RockAuto has them for about $65, OEM replacement.

Bolts up sure. Is the balance right?

Yes, both the 3.9 and the 318 are neutral balance.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at that $60 one on rockauto and looked up the specs....it is a 130 tooth flywheel (Which is what I have and doesn't work). Looks like that flywheel is for 90 V6 with a 5 speed. Looks like there is also 4 speed option that year (could that be a 833 OD? or maybe a truck 4 spd?) which uses the 143 tooth flywheel.
I have confirmed the 3.9 V6 and the 5.2's are all internal balance. Only the 360's were external balance.

Side question for you:
The V6 bell has the 5.125" input bearing size?

Not sure what you looked at, did you look at a Dak or a Ram? I assumed Dak.
RA shows the Luk flywheel you posted for about $74 if you look under the 90 Ram listing.

I looked under d150 ram...i saw the LUK there, good deal....but I don't think it's drilled for my 10.5" clutch. So, I'll probably need a clutch setup too. Just would like to order it all at once, or better yet use my existing clutch.
Yes, the V6 bell takes the big 5.125 retainer.

143 tooth neutral balanced flywheels.

There are also billet flywheels from places like 440Source for not too much more, and a billet flywheel is safer.
The flywheel will be drilled for an 11" pressure plate, either diaphragm or Borg & Beck, they use the same bolt pattern. This bolt pattern will also fit a 12" pressure plate.
Good news for you is that the 11" pressure plate will work with a 10.5" disk, there'll just be around 1/4" of pressure plate that doesn't get used.
OR, you could have a machine shop drill the flywheel for the 10.5" pressure plate. I did something like this and it cost $35.00 Holes are drilled all the way through and threaded, then counterbored so no threads pull up and keep the pressure plate from seating.

Thanks guys...I went ahead and ordered a new flywheel and clutch setup and will just sell my current/ clutch setup to recoup most of it. It's easier that way...
