8 1/4 brake question - 02/10/09 06:58 PM

I have an 8 1/4" axle that i'm going to use to replace the weedy 7 1/4" in my barracuda...changing the stud pattern to 4.5" at the same time...plan for the car is road handling and maybe the odd track day....
Theres no brakes with it and i was looking at the summit rear disc kit for $445, but this says its for 8 3/4 and 9 3/4...
would it fit an 8 1/4" axle...and if not what would need modifying?
thanks

I THINK the backing plates are the same. I think I would look for a 8 3/4 axel if I were going to spend $445.00 on rear brakes. Just my personal preferance.

I've had a look for an 8 3/4" axle... they're like rocking horse poo over here

Besides, if they are the same backing plates I can still use the brakes if I upgrade the axle later

The guy I bought tha axle off said he had used his 8 1/4 brakes on an 8 3/4 so I'm fairly sure myself that they'll swap, just want to make sure..

8.25 and 9.25 brakes are the same.

you can get 9" and 11" drums from dakotas and druangos, you can also get rear discs from them, some newer jeeps also have 8.25s with rear drums or discs that are already 5 lug patterns. brakes are as close as your nearest junk yard

HA! yea, probably not! I didn't look to see where you lived!

I have a bunch of brake stuff, 2 sets of drums, 1 set of backing plates, wheel cylinders, return springs, etc. let me know if you need any of it--it's for a dakota though, so the drums are 6 lug, but could be re-drilled for a 5.

or, I could go to the local u-pull-it, and grab a 5 lug drum brake set up off a jeep, or even a disc if I can find one, and I'll ship it all to you at my cost (parts from the junk yard plus shipping)

I used backing plates off of my 8.25 rear on my 8.75 rear....
