1965 Imperial Trans Cable Problem

1965 Imperial Trans Cable Problem - 06/21/16 01:47 PM

Morning,

Got a buddy with 1965 413/727 Imperial. told the pushbutton set-up on the 1965 was a one year only deal.

None of the gears are where they're supposed to be. Reverse is off a selection. Drive is only functional in 2-low.
Park doesn't engage at all, even if you manually move the park lever.........the tires will still move.

What have we missed?

Thanks.

The adjustment procedure for '65 is different from other years. What procedure did you use to adjust? What caused the problem to start? Perhaps John Kunkel will post his advice.

No pushbuttons in '65, only column or console shifters. In either case the procedure is as follows:

Remove the lock screw from the cable adjustment wheel and back the wheel off several turns.

1. Have an assistant hold the selector lever firmly in the "1" (Low) position.

2. Hold the control cable centered in its bore in the transmission case, and pull outward on the cable with about two pounds of force to bottom the manual lever in the "Low" detent.

3. While maintaining this pull on the cable, rotate the adjustment wheel clockwise until it just contacts the case squarely.

4. Turn the wheel counterclockwise just enough to make the nearest hole in the wheel line up with the screw hole in the case.

5. Counting this hole as number one, continue turning the wheel counterclockwise until the fifth hole lines up with the screw hole in the case.

6. Push the cable in toward the transmission until the adjustment wheel is tight against the case and install the lock screw, tightening to 75 inch-pounds torque.

Once again John Kunkel to the rescue. If it has push buttons it must be '64 or older. And I'm pretty sure the push button cable adjustment procedure is different in '64 compared to '63 and '62.

I too thought there was an Imperial only shifter oddity around that year. If it wasn't push buttons in 65 when the rest of the fleet went to lever, was it cable in 66 when the rest went to linkage shift?

Ok So, we've got Drive ( which won't shift out of first gear ) and Reverse..............no Park.....

Ehhhh, where did we go wrong?

You might have two problems; a faulty governor inside the trans preventing upshifts and misadjusted park cable. The shift cable and the park cable are separate adjustments.

The park cable is actuated by a mechanism at the base of the steering column inside the engine compartment; basically, when the shift lever is moved from Reverse to Park a separate mechanism takes over and actuates the park cable.

To isolate the "no upshift" problem, disconnect the rod that attaches to the transmission lever at the lever and allow the trans lever to come full forward. If it still won't automatically upshift in Drive the problem is internal.

Thanks for posting this. I saved it so that I can adjust the 65 Franken-transmission
