Headers Nickel chrome or ceramic?

Headers Nickel chrome or ceramic? - 04/16/16 06:55 PM

So I'm gonna get some TTI headers for my 440 with stealth heads. Do I want Nickel chrome or ceramic? Ceramic is more money.

Are there any fitment issues with TTI header with 1 7/8 primaries and stealth heads. The engine is going in a 1971 Dodge Challenger.

Thanks

They fit about as well as $300 headers.

Not hardly. The TTI headers I have are the best fitting headers I ever installed. Go with the Ceramic, I went with the nickel and it didn`t last long and they started to rust at the welds.

I agree the TTIs fit well.Mine are old CPPAs one of the first sets made.Been on the 65 since.Yeah the chrome is pretty much gone but still solid and working good.IIRC they were put on in around mid 90s.

My TTI's fit perfect. I bought them with no coating as they come in the nickel coating. They have been on my car for 5 years and they are turning color a little. I could have got them coated from TTI but it was about $100 dollars more as I paid $691 to get them in just the nickel coating which is the cheapest way to buy them. They are still holding up fine and are the best fitting headers I have ever used. If I had bought them ceramic coated it would have been $791 and they would most likely still looked like new. I have no complaints as I knew the nickle coating is not as good as ceramic coating but they still look fine for me. Ron

My TTI's have the ceramic coating. 12 years, a little rust near the flanges. We have the worlds best header coating locally, none better. I will send them to QC for a freshen up.

Really. You never had a problem with the header tubes touching the frame or starter (with stock engine mounts/trans mounts)? Guess I have to recheck everything.

The ceramic coating - inside and out - helps preserve the headers but more importantly also controls under hood heat. I have a set of 14 YO 1 7/8" TTI's on an E with B engine and Ed heads. On mine, the collectors show some rust starting and the tubes are fine. I keep running them. They fit as advertised with no adjustment. I have driven the car X country including across the desert and run >20 minutes of back to back hot laps on a road course w/o under hood heat issues. For that alone, I think the ceramic coating is worth it.

I agree, the temperature reduction under the hood is amazing.

^^ This ^^ I watched a video that showed the header temp coated and uncoated on the same engine. The temp reduction was substantial.

Do you want them to remain a single consistent color (ceramic)or do you want them to turn shades of blue and gold (chrome)?

I agree as my nickle coated TTI's give off a good bit of heat under the hood. With todays crappy pump gas keeping the underhood temps down as much as you can is a good idea. That is one reason I wish I had got mine coated. I dont mind the nickle that they are but if I had ben thinking more when I bought them I would have spent the extra money to ceramic coat them. But I did not know how bad this pump gas was going to get. Ron

Ceramic too will discolor or even burn off at temps exceeding some 1,500 degrees on your headers.

This is why coated headers are not recommended for breakin. If timing and mixture is way off the headers can get real hot.

In normal operation and reasonable tuneup, including racing, not an issue with ceramic, at least in my experience.

I ordered the 1 7/8" tti ceramic coated headers today from Wess at Mancini's. I know they will be great. The engine will be timed and broken in on the dyno so no worries about break in timing or lean issues.

I've had the nickle 2" tti's on my 440 with Eddy heads for over 10 years...still look decent but they do turn blue/gold. Fit is great... Way better than my old supercomps.
